Police focus on SUV in fatal N. Calif. train crash (AP)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? Investigators on Sunday were trying to determine what motivated the driver of a sport utility vehicle to ignore a downed crossing arm and flashing lights and pull the vehicle into the path of an oncoming commuter train in Sacramento.

Three died after the Saturday afternoon collision south of downtown, including Damian Williams, a 21-month-old boy, county coroner's officials said.

One of the four people inside the Nissan Pathfinder remained in the hospital Sunday at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where she was being treated for serious injuries.

Authorities also were trying to sort out the relationships of those involved and had not released the identities of the adults.

In addition to the toddler, the dead included a 25-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man, who was ejected from the Pathfinder when it was struck by the southbound light rail train traveling at 55 mph shortly after 4 p.m. The impact pushed the SUV about 30 yards down the track and flipped it.

Officer Laura Peck, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento Police Department, said the woman taken to the hospital was the man's wife.

Investigators and officials with the Sacramento Regional Transit District said video from cameras mounted on the intersection showed the SUV drive around the crossing arms just before impact. That video and other pictures captured by a camera mounted on the train are part of the investigation and were not being released publicly, Peck said.

Witness accounts appear to support the video evidence that the crossing arms were down and warning lights were flashing when the SUV tried to get across the tracks.

Davis resident Ravin Pratab, 42, was in a car that was waiting to cross the tracks when he said he heard a loud bang and then "saw a light-rail train heading south with a big truck smashed on it."

Authorities said six of the roughly 50 passengers on the light rail train were taken to local hospitals but had only minor injuries.

On Sunday, the tracks were cleared and the intersection was open, with no sign of the previous day's collision. A white teddy bear was placed at the base of the pole holding the crossing arm, on the same side of the tracks where the SUV had been before it attempted to cross.

Regional transit officials said trains were operating on their regular schedule after a section of track was repaired Saturday night.

One question investigators are trying to answer is the length of time the crossing arms were down. The light rail train passed through the intersection after two Union Pacific freight trains, going in opposite directions and using different tracks, had passed by.

Neither Peck nor a spokeswoman for the transit district said they knew the length of the interval between the time the freight trains cleared the intersection and the commuter line came through. The light rail system has its own dedicated tracks.

Drivers in Sacramento often can wait up to 10 minutes for a freight train to pass, then might have to wait several minutes more because of an approaching light rail train. The extended wait times can be a source of irritation ? and missed appointments ? in California's capital.

Alane Masui, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento Regional Transit District, said Sunday that determining the length of time the crossing arms were down and the interval between the trains was part of the ongoing investigation.

Sacramento's light rail system, started in 1987, carries an average of 50,000 passengers a day. On weekdays, it's packed with those commuting between the suburbs and state government jobs downtown.

Masui could not immediately say whether Saturday's collision was the deadliest in the system's history or how many collisions between light rail trains and vehicles had occurred in the past.

U.S. growth quickens, but speed bumps ahead (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The U.S. economy grew at its fastest pace in 1-1/2 years in the fourth quarter of 2011, but a strong rebuilding of stocks by businesses and a slower pace of business spending hinted at softer growth early this year.

U.S. gross domestic product expanded at a 2.8 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Friday, a sharp acceleration from the 1.8 percent clip of the prior three months and the quickest pace since the second quarter of 2010.

It was, however, a touch below economists expectations in a Reuters poll for a 3 percent rate, and two-thirds of rise in output was due to the build-up in business inventories.

Soft underlying demand and a sharp slowing in core inflation supported the Federal Reserve's decision to keep in place an ultra easy monetary policy to nurse the recovery.

"We do not expect growth to accelerate meaningfully from its current pace," said Michelle Girard, a senior economist at RBS in Stamford, Connecticut. She said Fed officials would focused on slack in the economy.

Stocks on Wall Street opened lower as investors worried about the composition of growth, while Treasury debt prices were little changed. The dollar fell against a basket of currencies.

INVENTORIES REBOUND

The economy in the fourth quarter got a temporary boost from the rebuilding of business inventories, which logged the biggest increase since the third quarter of 2010. The buildup followed a third quarter decline that was the first since late 2009.

Excluding inventories, the economy grew at a tepid 0.8 percent rate, a sharp step-down from the prior period's 3.2 percent pace and a sign of weak domestic demand.

The robust stock accumulation suggests the recovery will lose a step in early 2012 as businesses are unlikely to keep building inventories at the same rate.

Growth in business spending on capital goods was the slowest since 2009, a sign the debt crisis in Europe was starting to take its toll and another hint of weakness ahead.

The Fed on Wednesday said it expected to keep interest rates at rock bottom levels at least through late 2014, and Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank was mulling further asset purchases to speed the recovery.

The central bank warned the economy still faced big risks, a suggestion the euro zone debt crisis could still hit hard.

"We're still repairing the damage done by the financial crisis. On top of that we face a more challenging world. We have a lot of challenges ahead in the United States," U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Prospects of sluggish growth could hurt President Barack Obama's chances of re-election in November.

The economy grew 1.7 percent in 2011 after expanding 3 percent the prior year, and the unemployment stood at a still-high 8.5 percent in December.

AUTOS PROP UP CONSUMER SPENDING

Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, stepped up to a 2 percent rate from the third-quarter's 1.7 percent pace - largely driven by pent-up demand for motor vehicles.

The Japanese earthquake and tsunami had disrupted supplies early last year, leaving showrooms bereft of popular models.

Consumers also benefited from a moderation in inflation.

A price index for personal spending rose at a 0.7 percent rate in the fourth-quarter, the slowest increase in 1-1/2 years, after rising at a 2.3 percent pace in the July-September period.

A core inflation measure, which strips out food and energy costs, increased at a 1.1 percent rate after rising 2.1 percent in the third quarter. The slowdown could concern the Fed, which wants the measure closer to their 2 percent inflation target.

"Clearly, much work remains to achieve the Fed's dual mandate of maximum sustainable employment in the context of price stability," New York Federal Reserve Bank President William Dudley told reporters.

SLUGGISH INCOME GROWTH

High unemployment has led to sluggish income growth, which in turn has prompted households to tap savings and credit cards to fund their purchases.

Still, spending is unlikely to be a drag on growth, given that consumer sentiment is on the mend, as indicated by another report on Friday.

"Though the unemployment rate has improved, the jobs market remains a major challenge. Part of the decline in the unemployment rate is due to the fact that ... people have stopped looking for work," said Adolfo Laurenti, deputy chief economist at Mesirow Financial in Chicago.

"The high level of people out of the workforce and underemployed people show there isn't really much income generation to contribute to a better spending pattern."

A sustained growth pace of at least 3 percent would likely be needed to make noticeable headway in absorbing the unemployed and those who have given up the search for work.

Business spending grew at a sluggish 1.7 percent rate in the fourth quarter, pulling back sharply from the third-quarter's 15.7 percent pace.

Though exports held up, an increase in imports left a trade gap that chipped growth.

Unseasonably mild winter weather helped home construction post its fastest growth pace since the second quarter of 2010, with much of the increase going to meet rising demand for rental apartments.

Government spending shrank for a fifth consecutive quarter, reflecting a large decline in defense and still weak state and local government outlays. A bounceback could support growth at the start of the year.

Video: Military budget suffers cutbacks

>> a couple of weeks ago the size of the army would be brought down to 500,000. he said i would like to get it down to 490. that's where he is proposing it will go. i'm not convinced that he still doesn't want it to go further smaller.

>> when we cut 100,000 troops out of the army, how do you get the experience back overnight. john mccane said this is the greate greate greatest peril since the carter administration .

>> it's before the overreliance on the guard and reserve. we have to go there to get the people because we don't have enough on active duty. now we are making it absolutely guaranteed that if we go to war, we'll have to call on the guard.

>> the number of drones will increase. we know people believe that's a more controversial way of going to war using droe ining drones as oppose d to boots on the ground .

>> you're absolutely right. we had this conversation earlier. if you have lots of aircraft carriers and special operation forces , that means you can fight an enormous war and fight individual soldiers and terrorists which can't do a whole lot.

>> we know the drones have been effective, especially when looking at the territory in afghanistan that's no-man's land. it's key to where the taliban and other al qaeda have been hiding.

>> this administration has done a masterful job of eliminating large swaths of terrorists from pakistan and afghanistan and now in africa as well. if we're going to fight a smaller war, if we're going to be threatened in some other way by terrorists, we're not going to have the resources.

>> is this the natural way, when looking at budgets and wars that have not been paid for, the list goes on and on, isn't this the natural way, the progression as we look at the country in where we are?

>> yes. it's also the way to save money. i think that's the thing that's really driving in in the end, if you cancel programs, you're going to save money in the out years. you want to save money today, cancel the number of people.

>> it's jeopardizing the nation's security?

>> i believe it does. i'm like to see the marine corps larger than it is. it's much too low.

>> thank you very much.

Oprah Winfrey charms "chaotic" India at book event (Reuters)

JAIPUR, India (Reuters) ? Amid raucous cheers from thousands of admirers, television superstar Oprah Winfrey praised the contrast of calm and chaos in India at the region's largest literature festival fast becoming a global cultural gala.

Considered one of the world's most influential women, Winfrey lived up to her billing as the headline draw at an event boasting literary giants such as Tom Stoppard, Michael Ondaatje and Richard Dawkins, charming the crowds on Sunday morning.

"I came here with an open mind, and it has been expanded... It's the greatest life experience I have ever had," Winfrey said at the annual Jaipur Literature Festival in India's north-western state of Rajasthan.

"You feel like you're in the centre of something bigger and greater than yourself."

Hundreds of eager visitors jostled against barricades at the back of the main stage area as Winfrey began speaking. Security guards struggled to shut the main entrance gates as angry admirers tried to push their way inside.

"It's like being in a video game. I don't know which way to look," Winfrey told crowds on her arrival in Mumbai. "It's a bit chaotic, but there's an underlying calm, a flow, that you all seem to understand. India is a paradox."

The 57-year-old has caused a media storm in India, with news channels and front pages filled with stories of her touring the city of Mumbai with the Bachchans, Bollywood's first family. On Sunday she drew huge cheers as she appeared on stage in a traditional Indian churidar kameez smock.

"I will take with me a sense of calmness, and a genuine respect... people don't talk religion here, they live it," Winfrey said.

Her appearance on Sunday was seen as a welcome distraction from the Salman Rushdie furor that has overshadowed the five-day festival, after the author cancelled his planned visit due to reported assassination threats against him.

The talk-show host and interviewer's "Book Club" turned little-known authors into global stars, with 59 of the club's 70 selected books making the USA TODAY Top 10 best-sellers list.

Winfrey told the festival that in 2008, after witnessing the completion of her mission to get then-Senator Barack Obama to the White House, she stuck a picture of a woman riding a camel on her pinboard, that said "Come to India."

"It was important for me to go to slums but not show the worst of the worst, but show that people can live in poverty and still have hope and meaning in their lives," said Winfrey, who also called for Indians to work to eradicate discrimination against widows in society.

Linux Foundation Expects More Enterprise Gains in 2012

linux-on-the-riseThe Linux Foundation is sharing the results of their latest invitation-only survey of enterprise Linux users. Their last such survey, in August 2010, revealed Linux was gaining popularity in enterprise computing. It should come as no real surprise that the latest survey shows more of the same. A lot has happened since late 2010, and the Linux Foundation survey reflects that. In "Linux Adoption Trends 2012: A Survey of Enterprise End Users" we find that a substantial number of enterprise users "expressed concern with the rapid growth of data, and Linux is clearly the platform of choice to address it." Less than half of respondents are planning to use Windows to handle their "Big Data" requirements.

Ark. teen held on $750K bond in sister's death (AP)

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. ? A 15-year-old boy accused of fatally shooting his older sister at their family's rural Arkansas home was being held on a $750,000 bond after an initial court appearance Tuesday, and formal murder charges are expected by the end of next week, authorities said.

Prosecutor David Gibbons said he plans to charge the boy as an adult "because of the nature of the crime," but declined to elaborate. The boy hasn't been identified because of his age and his court hearing was closed to the public. The judge even forced his aunt and uncle out of the courtroom, leaving the boy to stand alone before the judge, Gibbons said.

The boy was appointed a public defender, who didn't immediately return a phone message seeking comment. His next court date is March 1.

Authorities said the boy showed up at the local sheriff's department on Sunday morning and told investigators that he had shot and killed his 16-year-old sister at their home near Ozark, a town roughly 120 miles northwest of Little Rock with about 3,600 residents. Franklin County Sheriff Anthony Boen said Tuesday that authorities were still awaiting preliminary autopsy results.

Boen said the boy appeared remorseful and had tears in his eyes when he turned himself in.

"He just said that he had just shot and killed his sister," Boen said. "He didn't give a motive."

The teen likely killed his sister sometime after 8 a.m. Sunday, when his parents left to go grocery shopping in Fort Smith, about 40 miles away, Boen said. The boy turned himself in at the sheriff's department about 90 minutes later.

Investigators confiscated multiple guns from the family's home and vehicle, and were trying to determine which weapon had been used in the shooting. The sheriff said the boy and his father were avid hunters.

Gibbons said formal charges could be filed this week or next week.

"Certainly with a 15-year-old suspect, we're going to expedite it as much as we can but we still have to have a complete and thorough report," Gibbons said. He said the hearing was held in Russellville, about 50 miles from the boy's home, because the local judge overseeing the case was working there Tuesday.

At the family's home, a wreath with purple and gold flowers hung at the end of a long gravel driveway leading to the house. A young man who came out of the home said the family wasn't ready to talk about what happened. He said he and an older woman who stood silently at his side were related to the siblings, then walked back into the home without giving their names.

Grief counselors were on hand Tuesday at Ozark High School, where the sister was a sophomore basketball player and the boy is in ninth grade, superintendent Jim Ford said. Ford declined to talk about the siblings' relationship or whether they had problems at the school, saying the family asked him not to discuss it.

"Our kids are hurting and this poor family is suffering," Ford said. "It's been a pretty tough day."

He wouldn't talk about how long the siblings had been enrolled at the school, but said the halls were quiet when students trickled back in after the long holiday weekend. The school's basketball games were canceled.

Inside the high school, another bouquet of purple and gold flowers ? the school's colors ? sat atop a receptionist's desk along with a ribbon bearing the sister's number, 42. The Associated Press is withholding the girl's name to not identify her brother, since he has not been formally charged.

"Praying For The Lady Hillbillies" and the siblings' family, a note near the flowers read, referring to the school's mascot. It was signed, "With Our Deepest Sympathy, The Shiloh Lady Saints," the team that the girls' basketball squad had been scheduled to play Tuesday.
