'Invisibility cloak' for waves discovered

Mathematicians have determined how to create an invisibility cloak that works for anything that acts like a wave, such as light, sound and particles. The cloak makes the waves inside it impossible to detect from the outside.?

Inside the cloak, the waves can either be amplified or shrunk so they're hidden. "You can isolate and magnify what you want to see and make the rest invisible," said Gunther Uhlmann, a mathematician from the University of Washington who led the study.?

Uhlmann and his colleagues call this unusual state a Schr?dinger hat, partly to commemorate the Schr?dinger's cat thought experiment, which applies the uncertainty in quantum physics rules to a cat to show how strange quantum physics rules sound when they're applied to a bigger, more everyday example.

The name also refers to how magical the cloak's effects appear to be. "It looks like a particle is being created. It's like pulling something out of your hat," Uhlmann said. In addition, the hat state is expected to work for any waves described by one of two equations, named after Schr?dinger and Hermann von Helmholtz, a 19th-century physicist.

A Schr?dinger hat could be used to make a microscope that detects the quantum waves of matter, the researchers wrote in their paper, which was published in Monday's early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Such a device would help engineers monitor electronic processes on computer chips.?

Though the mathematicians haven't built a Schr?dinger hat device yet, it should be easy to do for sound waves, which are long in comparison to light waves and electromagnetic waves, Uhlmann said. The team is looking for collaborators to help them build a prototype device.?

"We hope that it's feasible, but in science, you don't know until you do it," he said. ?

Time flows uphill for remote Papua New Guinea tribe

"HERE and now", "Back in the 1950s", "Going forward"... Western languages are full of spatial metaphors for time, and whether you are, say, British, French or German, you no doubt think of the past as behind you and the future as stretching out ahead. Time is a straight line that runs through your body.

Once thought to be universal, this "embodied cognition of time" is in fact strictly cultural. Over the past decade, encounters with various remote tribal societies have revealed a rich diversity of the ways in which humans relate to time (see "Attitudes across the latitudes"). The latest, coming from the Yupno people of Papua New Guinea, is perhaps the most remarkable. Time for the Yupno flows uphill and is not even linear.

Rafael N??ez of the University of California, San Diego, led his team into the Finisterre mountain range of north-east Papua New Guinea to study the Yupno living in the village of Gua. There are no roads in this remote region. The Yupno have no electricity or even domestic animals to work the land. They live with very little contact with the western world.

N??ez and his colleagues noticed that the tribespeople made spontaneous gestures when speaking about the past, present and future. They filmed and analysed the gestures and found that for the Yupno the past is always downhill, in the direction of the mouth of the local river. The future, meanwhile, is towards the river's source, which lies uphill from Gua.

This was true regardless of the direction they were facing. For instance, if they were facing downhill when talking about the future, a person would gesture backwards up the slope. But when they turned around to face uphill, they pointed forwards (Cognition, DOI: 10.1016/j.cognition.2012. 03.007).

N??ez thinks the explanation is historical. The Yupno's ancestors arrived by sea and climbed up the 2500-metre-high mountain valley, so lowlands may represent the past, and time flows uphill.

But the most unusual aspect of the Yupno timeline is its shape. The village of Gua, the river's source and its mouth do not lie in a straight line, so the timeline is kinked. "This is the first time ever that a culture has been documented to have everyday notions of time anchored in topographic properties," says N??ez.

Within the dark confines of their homes, geographical landmarks disappear and the timeline appears to straighten out somewhat. The Yupno always point towards the doorway when talking about the past, and away from the door to indicate the future, regardless of their home's orientation. That could be because entrances are always raised, says N??ez. You have to climb down - towards the past - to leave the house, so each home has its own timeline.

"This study is an important landmark," says Pierre Dasen, an anthropologist at the University of Geneva in Switzerland who was not involved in the work. "It demonstrates both universality of cognitive processes and a fascinating cultural difference."

Lera Boroditsky of Stanford University in California agrees. "Each one of these discoveries isn't just telling us something about other people, it's telling us something about us," she says. "A lot of English speakers think that it's natural to think of time as a straight line. But that's an illusion. It doesn't have to be that way."

Attitudes across the latitudes

Timelines come in all shapes and directions. For the Aymara people of the Andes, time flows front to back. The past, which was known and hence seen, lies in front. The future - unknown and unseen - is behind (Cognitive Science, DOI: 10.1207/s15516709cog0000_62).

Over in Australia, the timeline of the Pormpuraaw, a remote Aboriginal community, runs along the east-west axis. The past is east. Time for the Pormpuraaw flows from left to right if they are facing south, right to left if they are facing north, towards the body if they are facing east, and away from the body if they are facing west (Psychological Science, DOI: 10.1177/0956797610386621).

And in China, Mandarin speakers sometimes represent time along a vertical axis, with the past above and the future below (Cognition, DOI: 10.1016/j.cognition.2010.09.010).

Kiev, Warsaw protest Euro 2012 racism accusations

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -European Championship co-hosts Kiev and Warsaw have decried as unfair a BBC report that portrayed their fans as racist, and UEFA reiterated that all foreign guests will be safe.

The BBC Panaroma documentary, titled "Euro 2012: Stadiums of Hate," showed fans in Ukraine and Poland giving the Nazi salute and taunting black players with monkey noises. Asian students were also shown being attacked at Metalis Stadium in Kharkiv, one of the host venues.

Former England captain Sol Campbell said in the program broadcast on Monday in Britain that fans should not travel to those countries "because you could end up coming back in a coffin."

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Voloshyn said the program was unjust and smacked of arrogance and xenophobia as it portrayed "Eastern Europe as mentally not equal to the rest of Europe."

"We believe this report is outrageous, done in the best traditions of Soviet journalism," Voloshyn said. "Ukraine is one the leaders in Europe in terms of religious and racial tolerance.

"Nazi symbols can be seen at ... any match in England, but does it mean that fans should not come to London for the Olympics?"

Markian Lubkivsky, UEFA's Euro 2012 director in Ukraine, said foreign fans coming to Ukraine would be safe.

"From UEFA's point of view, I see no threats for citizens of various nationalities to stay in Ukraine," Lubkivsky was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. He added Campbell's statement was "vexing" for Ukraine.

In Poland, the government body that is organizing Euro 2012 called the accusations of racism "unjust," stressing that Poland has zero tolerance for racism and xenophobia.

"The problem of stadium pathologies, such as xenophobia or racism, is a problem specific to the whole of Europe and not only to Poland," said Mikolaj Piotrowski, a spokesman for the body. "As in every European country, it affects a small minority of those present at the stadiums - unfortunately, a minority that is usually loud and visible in the media."

Referring to Campbell, he said, "Dear Sol, feel invited - feel like at home; in Poland, at our common Euro 2012. Get to know us as we really are."

Poland's Interior Ministry said in statement it would complain to the BBC because its report contained "unjust," biased and unverified opinions. Ministry spokeswoman Malgorzata Wozniak said Polish police were ready to ensure security during the tournament.

Commenting on the program, Campbell urged fans to not go to Poland and Ukraine for Euro 2012, which starts next week.

"Stay at home, watch it on TV. Don't even risk it," said Campbell, who was black.

He added that European football's governing body was wrong to award the tournament to Poland and Ukraine.

"What they should say is, `If you want this tournament, you sort your problems out. Until we see a massive improvement ... you do not deserve these prestigious tournaments in your country,"' he said.

Ukraine finds itself under increasing scrutiny and pressure as it prepares to host the championship. Besides the racism accusations, President Viktor Yanukovych is under harsh criticism for the politically tainted jailing of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Some critics say Euro 2012 has turned into a public relations disaster for Ukraine.

Forum stresses business ethics | Reputational Compliance

Labor Minister Adel Fakeih, who opened the Work and Business Ethics Forum yesterday at Alqasr Hall of Hilton Hotel, said that a ?charter of principles? has been prepared by his ministry that would go a long way in helping businesses while streamlining jobs and services.

Speaking in the first session of the forum, Fakeih said the charter has, in principle, ways and means of the working between the ministries, its officials, those receiving its services and society. The minister said the charter?s principles also include work ethics and how they were reflected in the behaviors of ministry?s officials whose performance has improved.

The ministry?s goal is to provide decent and attractive job opportunities for Saudis, and enable them to be outstanding in their jobs via creative development of the rules, mechanisms and incentives of the labor market, regulating the employer-employee relations and raise the level of social protection for all, he said.

The forum?s Secretary-General Dr. Ehab bin Hasan Abu Rukba said the forum aims to stress the importance of strengthening the practice of ethics that stems form the heritage of the country among enterprises and inside the organizations themselves.

He said these ethics would help the business sector become more productive and consequently more competitive. He said the chamber?s code stresses complying to Islamic morals in business ? honesty, solidarity, and preventing counterfeiting, monopoly, unjustifiable raising of prices and greed.

He added the chamber made ?strengthening ethical commitment? a strategic goal, pointing out that it had established an Ethics Administration at the Social Responsibility Center with the task of calling for reviving work ethics at 30 businesses and strengthening values in those in charge of education.

?The aim is to strengthen the principles of dedication, justice, mercy, self control, courage, honesty, fulfilling commitments, sense of responsibility, respecting others, team work, positivity, openness toward other cultures and moderation,? he said.

Al-Hamdan added that it is important to have a system that governs the commercial-ethical relations between businessmen and another between them and consumers, saying that the idea of the chamber?s Code of Ethics is aimed at ?bringing back what was present in the past and working on attracting big and small businessmen to adopt it as to start of a new era.? He said the center seeks to implement a concept of social corporate responsibility that is compliant to the values of Islamic morals and principles of solidarity (takaful) and based on international standards of corporate citizenship.

Of the center?s goals is for the JCCI to become a model in implementing social responsibility in the sector of business. It will support the sector in its application of international social responsibility policies and procedures and work with relevant authorities to produce a clear and comprehensive national social responsibility strategy that would achieve a large progress toward a responsible business sector, he said.

Saleh Kamel, chairman of Dallah Albaraka Group and chairman of the JCCI board, spoke in the third session about work ethics in the past, as well as the chamber?s project that stated the work ethics for 30 professions. He called for issuing a code of ethics.

D. Amal Shira, deputy chairman of the chamber?s human resources committee, said the forum?s theme ?Returning to Originality? implies three main goals: Strengthening moral values in organizations and individuals, creating a competitive advantage in the business sector, and recognizing the role of ethics in improving social responsibly of corporates.

The forum features more than 20 working papers and discussion sessions, in addition to a number of sideline meetings and events that will cover several topics.

Bank of America, Barclays sell Archstone stake

NEW YORK (AP) ? Bank of America Corp. and Barclays Bank PLC are selling their stake in the apartment building owner Archstone to Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.'s bankruptcy estate for $1.58 billion.

The transaction disclosed Friday for the banks' 26.5 percent interest will give Lehman's estate full ownership of Archstone, an Englewood, Colo.-based company that owned all or part of 434 apartment communities in the U.S. and Europe as of the end of March.

"This transaction protects Lehman's substantial investment, provides stability and gives us control of Archstone's future," Lehman Chairman Owen Thomas said in a statement.

The move also blocks plans by Chicago-based Equity Residential, an apartment owner whose chairman is real estate magnate Sam Zell, to buy the stake.

Equity Residential had offered in December to acquire an Archstone stake from BofA and Barclays for $1.33 billion. But Lehman exercised its right to match that offer. It used that same right on Friday to purchase the remaining stake of Archstone.

Equity would get $150 million from the two banks and Lehman for walking away from the deal. BofA and Barclays will pay an $80 million breakup fee, while Lehman will pay a $70 million termination fee. If the Lehman purchase falls through, Equity's deal with BofA and Barclays will remain in effect.

The deal comes as the U.S. apartment market has been gaining strength, buoyed by a pickup in job growth that is encouraging more people who have been sharing housing with relatives or roommates to rent on their own.

On Thursday, the National Association of Realtors forecast that apartment vacancies nationwide will continue to decline over the next 12 months to 4.3 percent. Rates below 5 percent generally lead to rising rental rates, which means bigger profits for landlords like Archstone.

BofA and Barclays had joined Lehman in a $22.2 billion leveraged buyout of Archstone-Smith Trust in 2007. Initially, Lehman owned a 47 percent stake in privately held Archstone and the banks owned a 53 percent stake.

Lehman collapsed in 2008 in the biggest corporate bankruptcy in U.S. history.

The companies said Friday that the Lehman bankruptcy estate's transaction for the rest of Archstone is expected to close in the second quarter.
