For all the hype created and long-term expense added, the Los Angeles Dodgers' talent/payroll accumulation guarantees them exactly nothing. Not for the rest of this season. And not beyond 2012.
And nobody knows it better than manager Don Mattingly.
"We don't think that we're going to show up and win, just because we got new guys," Mattingly said. "We're pretty realistic. We've got to play, and we know it."
We've never seen this big of a roster-altering deal this late in a season. Last week's blockbuster deal with the Red Sox rendered the July 31 non-waivers deadline irrelevant, and the Dodgers' talent grab since the All-Star break has grown their booklet of new player biographies to 25 pages, front and back.
And to ask a dramatically made-over roster, with eight new players added in the past six weeks, to put everything together, erase a short deficit in the standings and earn a playoff spot might be a stretch.
"I think we all know that we're in a short-term, short-run, sprint situation, and anything can happen ? no matter what kind of guys you have playing," Mattingly said. "To me, our challenge is what kind of baseball are we going to play? What are we going to be?"
The immediate answer hasn't been pretty. The Dodgers arrived at Coors Field on Monday off two home games following the mega-deal, and by the time they left town, were facing a list of sobering issues.
We're not just talking about 10-0 and 8-4 losses before a sweep-avoiding 10-8 victory Wednesday tainted by the Rockies' seven-run bottom of the eighth.
Matt Kemp bruised a knee, hurt his jaw and dented the center-field wall on a scary-looking attempt at Josh Rutledge's triple Monday, but he should be back soon enough a day or so.Closer Kenley Jansen again is dealing with a heart-related issue that has sidelined him indefinitely. You know how crucial those two losses could be when Mattingly says, "it's still going to get back to our pitching. We have to pitch well enough every day to keep us in games." Look for the Dodgers to try to make another trade, although at this point, there isn't much left to acquire.
And one more thing. Make no mistake ? the Rockies, Giants and rest of the National League will be gunning for a team that has picked up the "Yankees of the West" tag. Why, the Rockies' Jim Tracy managed the Dodgers' series as if it was his team's playoffs.
Facing deficits of 3 1/2 games in the NL West and 1 1/2 games in the wild-card race, the Dodgers' final five weeks will bring a very challenging schedule ? more so than those of the Giants, Pirates and Braves.
Unlike the Giants, who will stay entirely within the NL West after this weekend's series against the Cubs, the Dodgers will face a crucial 10-game, out-of-division stretch Sept. 13-23: four games vs. St. Louis, three in Washington, and three in Cincinnati. The Dodgers also have six more cracks at the Giants: Sept. 7-9 in AT&T Park, and a season-ending series Oct. 1-3 in Dodger Stadium.
In contrast, the Braves have only two series remaining against playoff contenders: at home Sept. 14-16 against the Nationals and a season-ending series in Pittsburgh.
The Pirates already are done with the Cardinals, and other than that season-ending series against the Braves, will play only six games against a playoff contender: home-and-home series with the Reds.

Breast Cancer Drug Could Help Prostate Cancer Patients' Side ...
The breast cancer drug tamoxifen may reduce some side effects of men undergoing prostate cancer treatment, according to a new study?published August 27 in the journal BMC Medicine.
The study involved researchers who looked at four different studies of men with prostate cancer, reports Fox News. The study discovered that, when the men?s treatments were supplemented with tamoxifen, they were less likely to see breast enlargement and breast pain than those who did not take the breast cancer drug.
The researchers showed that men who took tamoxifen were 10 percent less likely to have breast enlargement after six months and six percent less likely to experience breast cancer. The tamoxifen breast cancer drug works to counteract the effects of estrogen on breast tissue.
The breast cancer drug was also able to prevent these side effects of prostate cancer treatment better than other drugs like anastrozole, which also counteracts estrogen?s effects but in a different way. Men tend to stop prostate cancer treatments because of the growth of breast tissue and breast pain, according to the researchers.
Lead study author Dr. Frank Kunath of the University Clinic Erlangen in Germany stated that:
?If men know that there is a successful option for reducing the breast symptoms associated with treatment for prostate cancer, they may be more likely to see their doctor when symptoms of cancer first appear, and consequently reduce the number of unnecessary deaths.?
US News went on to note that Dr. Kunath also stated:
?Not all men will suffer [breast enlargement] during anti-androgen therapy. However, if men know that there is a successful option for reducing the breast symptoms associated with treatment for prostate cancer, they may be more likely to see their doctor when symptoms of cancer first appear, and consequently reduce the number of unnecessary deaths.?
The researchers also showed that few of the prostate cancer patients who were treated with the breast cancer drug tamoxifen stopped taking their medication during the year-long treatment, and the drug also caused no significant side effects.

AT&T LTE - Verizon expanded its 4G LTE network in 34 new markets today while the network has also become more widespread in 38 other markets.

In telecommunications, 4G is the fourth generation of cell phone mobile communications standards. It is a successor of the third generation (3G) standards. A 4G system provides mobile ultra-broadband Internet access, for example to laptops with USB wireless modems, to smartphones, and to other mobile devices. Likely applications include amended mobile web access, IP telephony, gaming services, high-definition mobile TV, video conferencing and 3D television.
Verizone covers 75 % of USA through its 4G network
Verizon Wireless customers with compatible 4G LTE smartphones, modems, tablets and mobile hotspots will be able to wirelessly surf the Web, stream music and video, and download files up to 10 times faster than customers on 3G.
In real-world, fully loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless? 4G LTE customers should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

Both AT&T and Verizon have expanded their high-speed 4G LTE networks
Verizon expanded its 4G LTE network in 34 new markets today while the network has also become more widespread in 38 other markets. That expansion brings Verizon?s 4G LTE?grand total to 370 markets here in the United States, making it the carrier with the largest 4G LTE footprint far and away its original land.
AT&T on the other hand has some catching up to do. However, the carrier has taken another step in that direction today by expanding to five new markets today bringing its total 4G LTE footprint up to 53.
Both carriers plan to complete their 4G LTE roll outs by the end of 2013 though it?s clear that Verizon will very likely complete its roll out much sooner than that.
AT&T has brought 4G LTE access to five new markets that include Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, and Bentonville, Arkansas. It has also brought service to Waco, Texas.
This means that customers in those areas can now utilize 4G LTE devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note and Nokia Lumia 900.
4G LTE data speeds can reach up to 10 times faster than those found on a typical 3G network.
As for Verizon, it has launched its network in 34 markets. They include:

As the Voice noted, others, including Joel Thurtell, a Michigan blogger, had written outraged articles about the bond issue. But it was the Voice article that attracted national attention, including a report on CNBC.
It turns out the Poway bond issue is not unique. This kind of borrowing has been going on for years, particularly in California, where the tax revolt that began with Proposition 13 in 1978 has made it harder and harder to finance education or other local government services. Assorted propositions approved by voters have made it very difficult to raise taxes at all.
According to a Thomson Reuters database, school districts issued nearly $4 billion in such bonds last year, and have sold almost $3 billion more this year. Back in 2006, when the credit boom was in full bloom, $9 billion worth of capital appreciation bonds were sold.
The Poway issue is unusual in delaying interest payments for so long, but there have been others. Its neighbor, the San Diego Unified School District, borrowed $150 million in May, promising to begin payments in 2032.
School districts? logic for borrowing for construction projects always was that those who benefit should pay for a construction project. In the case of the Poway bond, however, it is at least possible that it will be the children of today?s students who end up paying the bill. By then, many of these school buildings may be obsolete, or at least in need of another refurbishing.
In a statement, the Poway district pointed out that bond issue was the fifth part of a plan to modernize the 24 oldest schools in the district, adding that while that bond ?has a total repayment ratio of 9.3 times the principal amount,? the overall borrowing program has a repayment ratio of just 4.2. That means that for every dollar borrowed, $3.20 in interest will be paid.
To put that into perspective, a 30-year mortgage at the same 6.8 percent interest rate would require $1.35 in lifetime interest payments for each dollar borrowed, or a repayment ratio of 2.35.
?The most important value received from the building program that is difficult to quantify is the educational value of providing today?s students with quality learning facilities,? said John Collins, the superintendent of the district, which has 34,000 students. ?It is also difficult to calculate the dollar value of savings realized by avoiding the inflated construction costs of postponing the completion of the building program for a decade or more.?

Nationally, it appears that fewer and fewer school districts have been able, or willing, to find ways to finance new buildings ? or even to pay teachers, as property tax revenue plunged with the deflating of the housing bubble and pinched states reduced assistance. State and local governments are spending less, and employing fewer people, now than they were before the recession. Adjusted for inflation, state and local investment in buildings and other assets is at the lowest level since 1998. Over the last 30 months, the economy has gained about half a million jobs in manufacturing, and lost nearly as many in state and local government.
Should districts issue such bonds? It is not an easy question to answer. Much of this expensive borrowing is a result of local officials searching for a way to meet their responsibilities at a time when opposition to taxes has become a mantra. This generation will not pay for what it needs, so some of its leaders have decided to saddle future generations with the bills.

Kids' cholesterol down; fewer trans fats cited
ATLANTA (AP) ? Finally some good news about cholesterol and kids: A big government study shows that in the past decade, the proportion of children who have high cholesterol has fallen.
The results are surprising, given that the childhood obesity rate didn't budge.
How can that be?
Some experts think that while most kids may not be eating less or exercising more, they may be getting fewer trans fats. That's because the artery-clogging ingredient has been removed or reduced in many processed or fried foods such as doughnuts, cookies and french fries.
"That's my leading theory," said Dr. Sarah de Ferranti, director of preventive cardiology at Boston Children's Hospital. She wrote an editorial that accompanies the study.
The study did not look at the reasons for the decline, but its lead author, Dr. Brian Kit of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the theory makes sense.
The research, released online Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association, also showed that children's average overall cholesterol levels declined slightly.
Too much cholesterol in the blood raises the risk of heart disease. It isn't usually an immediate threat for most children, but those who have the problem often grow into adults with a high risk.
Kit and his colleagues drew data from an intensive national study that interviews people and does blood-cholesterol tests. They focused on more than 16,000 children and adolescents over three periods ? 1988-94, 1999-2002 and 2007-10.
During the most recent period studied, 1 in 12 children ages 6 through 19 had high cholesterol. That was down from 1 in 9 during each of the earlier periods ? roughly a 28 percent decline.
The average overall cholesterol level fell from 165 to 160. In children, 200 is considered too high.
The study was the first in almost 20 years to show such a decline. Kids' cholesterol levels also fell between the 1960s and the early 1990s, probably because people were eating less fat.
The researchers in the latest study detected modest improvements in children's levels of so-called good cholesterol, which can protect the heart. That may be partly due to declines in teen smoking and childhood exposure to secondhand smoke over the last decade. Studies have found that chemicals in cigarette smoke can lower good cholesterol.
The bigger news was what happened with bad cholesterol and triglycerides. They went down by small but significant amounts.
Cholesterol levels have been declining in adults, too. The incidence of high cholesterol dropped about 27 percent in the last decade, from about 1 in 5 adults at the beginning of the period to 1 in 7 at the end.
But cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins were a big part of the reason for that decline ? millions of adults take them. Children are rarely given statins.
Last year, a government-appointed panel urged widespread cholesterol screening for children. It was controversial because of concerns it would lead to more kids being given medicine. Experts say statins should be used in only the worst cases ? less than 1 percent.
Artificial trans fats are known to decrease good cholesterol and increase bad cholesterol. In 2006, the federal government began requiring that packaged foods list the amount of trans fat per serving, a boon for careful shoppers.
Meanwhile, a push to take trans fats out of foods gained momentum. New York City banned artificial trans fats in restaurant food in 2008. California in 2010 became the first state to adopt such a ban. Even Crisco, the goopy shortening that was trans fat incarnate, was reformulated to take it out.
"I love the idea that reduced use of hydrogenated trans fats might be responsible" for the new study's results, Marion Nestle, a New York University professor of nutrition, food studies and public health, said in an email. "If so ? and as usual it's clear that more research is needed ? it would mean that public health measures like the trans fat ban in New York City are actually doing enough good to be measurable."
This is not the first study to suggest a payoff in trans fat policy efforts. The U.S. Department of Agriculture found that from 2005 to 2010, the average trans fat content in bakery items and other foods declined steeply. A small, preliminary CDC study published earlier this year found significant drops in trans fats in white adults between 2000 and 2009.
Despite the good news, experts remain worried.
Seventeen percent of U.S. children are obese, perhaps because they are still eating lots of carbohydrates and sugar. That, along with little exercise, can lead to diabetes and heart disease.
"We may have a small effect in the right direction from lower cholesterol, but I'm worried it will be overwhelmed by the earlier onset of obesity in younger and younger children," de Ferranti said. "I'm still pretty worried about how many kids are going to wind up patients of adult cardiologists."

Thousands gather to bury Ghana's Mills
Thousands of mourners from presidents and dignitaries to ordinary Ghanaians arrived in the capital's Independence Square on Friday for the funeral of president John Atta Mills.
His body lay in state early Friday, for a third straight day, for a final viewing before being placed in a black limousine for the short drive to the funeral site under military guard.
Among those who viewed Mills' body before the service were Ivory Coast's President Alassane Ouattara, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia as well as the leaders of Benin and neighbouring Togo.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was due to attend the funeral.
"He was like a brother to me. I will surely miss him," Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe told journalists.
Benin's leader, also the current African Union chairman, Thomas Boni Yayi, described Mills as "passionate about peace in Africa and in the region."
His death on July 24 following an illness came as a shock to many Ghanaians, despite rumours that he had been sick and reports that he suffered from throat cancer.
Mills's death just five months ahead of polls in which he was to seek re-election upended the presidential race in a country that recently became a significant oil producer and is praised as a stable democracy in an often turbulent region.
Organisers said roughly 10,000 people were expected to attend the 90 minute ceremony, after which Mills's body will be taken to Osu Castle, the official presidential residence, for burial.
A special seating area had been set up for the 16 heads of state and other dignitaries who are due to attend.
Clinton, currently on an African tour, arrived in Accra late Thursday after a brief stop in Nigeria's capital, where she met with President Goodluck Jonathan.
For those unable to access the grounds, funeral organisers have set up large television screens that will broadcast the ceremony, visible to people on the square's periphery. The event will also be shown on national television.
Some, however, arrived early and secured a place in the square, which was filling up rapidly.
"Today is my saddest day," said Akua Danso, an 80-year-old former teacher who was confined to a wheelchair, being pushed by her grandson.
"I have seen presidents come and go but he was the best. He was very humble. I wish I had the opportunity to meet him while he was alive, just to tell him that he was a gem," she told AFP.
For a brief period, a helicopter hovering over the area dropped flyers that urged peace in Ghana's December vote.
"We want peaceful elections in 2012," read the flyer.
Mills former vice president John Dramani Mahama was sworn in to serve out the remainder of Mills's term hours after his death, as dictated by the constitution.
The new president is expected to be endorsed by the ruling party to run in the December election, which analysts say is likely to be close.
