(AP) ? Faced with an unprecedented strike by the courts and massive opposition protests, Egypt's Islamist president is not backing down in the showdown over decrees granting him near-absolute powers.

Activists warn that his actions threaten a "second revolution," but Mohammed Morsi faces a different situation than his ousted predecessor, Hosni Mubarak: He was democratically elected and enjoys the support of the nation's most powerful political movement.

Already, Morsi is rushing the work of an Islamist-dominated constitutional assembly at the heart of the power struggle, with a draft of the charter expected as early as Thursday, despite a walkout by liberal and Christian members that has raised questions about the panel's legitimacy.

The next step would be for Morsi to call a nationwide referendum on the document. If adopted, parliamentary elections would be held by the spring.

Wednesday brought a last-minute scramble to seize the momentum over Egypt's political transition. Morsi's camp announced that his Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists will stage a massive rally in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the plaza where more than 200,000 opposition supporters gathered a day earlier.

The Islamists' choice of the square for Saturday's rally raises the possibility of clashes. Several hundred Morsi opponents are camped out there, and another group is fighting the police on a nearby street.

"It is tantamount to a declaration of war," said liberal politician Mustafa al-Naggar, speaking on the private Al-Tahrir TV station.

Morsi remains adamant that his decrees, which place him above oversight of any kind, including by the courts, are in the interest of the nation's transition to democratic rule.

Backing down may not be an option for the 60-year-old U.S.-educated engineer.

Doing so would significantly weaken him and the Brotherhood at a time when their image has been battered by widespread charges that they are too preoccupied with tightening their grip on power to effectively tackle the country's many pressing problems.

Morsi's pride is also a key factor in a country where most people look to their leader as an invincible figure.

He may not be ready to stomach another public humiliation after backing down twice since taking office in June. His attempt to reinstate parliament's Islamist-dominated lower chamber after it was disbanded in July by the Supreme Constitutional Court was overturned by that same court. Last month, Morsi was forced to reinstate the country's top prosecutor just days after firing him when the judiciary ruled it was not within his powers to do so.

Among Morsi's first acts after seizing near-absolute powers last week was to fire the prosecutor again.

Unlike last year's anti-Mubarak uprising, calls for Morsi's ouster have so far been restricted to zealous chants by protesters, with the opposition focusing its campaign on demands that he rescind his decrees, disband the constitutional panel and replace it with a more inclusive one, and fire the Cabinet of Prime Minister Hesham Kandil.

"There is no practical means for Morsi's ouster short of a coup, which is very, very unlikely," said Augustus Richard Norton, a Middle East expert from Boston University.

Still, the opposition, whose main figures played a key role in the anti-Mubarak uprising, may be tempted to try to force Morsi from office if they continue to draw massive crowds like Tuesday's rally, which rivaled some of the biggest anti-Mubarak demonstrations. They will also likely take advantage of the growing popular discontent with Morsi's government and the fragility of his mandate ? he won just 51 percent of the vote in a presidential election fought against Mubarak's last prime minister.

With the country still reeling from the aftershocks of the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak's 29-year regime, activists and analysts warn that any escalation carries the risk of a second, and possibly bloody, revolution ? pitting Islamists against non-Islamists, including liberals, women and minority Christians.

Ominous signs abound. Anti-Morsi crowds have attacked at least a dozen offices belonging to the Brotherhood across the nation since last week. Clashes between the two sides have left at least two dead and hundreds wounded.

The violence and polarization has led to warnings from some newspaper columnists and the public at large of the potential for "civil war."

"As opposed to seeking face-saving compromises, (escalation by Morsi) would indicate starkly that Egypt's leaders have increasingly come to understand the current moment in zero-sum terms," said Michael W. Hanna, an Egypt expert from the New York-based Century Foundation.

"Beyond the political dangers it poses, the move will increase the risks that the contests for power will spill over into the streets, with civil strife a real possibility."

While potentially destabilizing, Morsi's tug-of-war with the liberal opposition pales in comparison to his battle with the powerful judiciary, which considers the president's decrees an unprecedented assault on its authority.

On Wednesday, judges of the nation's highest appeals court and its lower sister court went on strike to protest the decrees, joining hundreds of other judges who have not worked since Sunday.

The Supreme Constitutional Court, which is to rule Sunday on the legality of the constitutional panel and parliament's upper chamber ? both dominated by Morsi's Brotherhood and other Islamists ? admonished the president for accusing it of trying to bring down his government.

The loss of the judiciary's goodwill could prove costly for Morsi.

Already, the judges are warning that, unless their demands are met, they will not assume their traditional role of supervising a referendum on a new constitution or the parliamentary elections that would follow. Without them, the legitimacy of any vote would be in question.

"This is the highest form of protest," said Nasser Amin, head of the Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession. "The judges felt that the constitutional declaration has taken away from them the dearest and most important mandates" ? oversight of government decisions.

Disney profit meets expectations, lifted by parks, ESPN

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Media giant Walt Disney Co posted higher quarterly profit on Thursday, lifted by an increase in visitors to its theme parks and revenue gains at sports juggernaut ESPN.

The company that recently announced a blockbuster deal to buy "Star Wars" producer Lucasfilm reported diluted earnings per share of 68 cents. That matched expectations from Wall Street analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Net income for the quarter that ended in September rose 14 percent to $1.2 billion.

Looking ahead, Disney faces challenges that will pressure results for its fiscal first quarter from October to December, Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo told analysts on a conference call. Among them, sports rights' costs will increase by $170 million while home video sales decline by $150 million in light of tough comparisons to "Cars 2" a year earlier, he said.

Those issues will not hurt full-year earnings for fiscal 2013, Rasulo said. "I'm confident we will have solid earnings growth for the rest of the year," he said.

CEO Bob Iger said Disney was entering a "transition year" after making investments in projects such as the "Cars Land" expansion at Disneyland Resort in California and a new cruise ship that launched this year. The company is moving from "investment mode" into "a more compelling growth mode," he said.

Disney plans to stimulate its growth through its $4 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm, announced on October 30, and plans for three new "Star Wars" films starting in 2015.

Results for the just-ended quarter were driven by the media networks unit that houses ESPN, the Disney Channels and ABC. The division posted operating income of $1.6 billion, a 7 percent gain from a year earlier. ESPN brought in higher rates from cable operators and reduced its marketing costs although advertising income fell, Disney said.

Increased programming costs at online video service Hulu dragged on results for the ABC broadcasting unit, Rasulo said. The quarter was "slightly negative" for ABC and would have ended "slightly higher" without Hulu, he said.

The theme parks division gained from passengers spending more time on Disney cruise ships plus higher attendance at parks in Hong Kong, California and Paris, the company said. Operating income climbed 18 percent to $497 million during the quarter.

Operating income at Disney's film studio fell 32 percent, in part because the box office performance of animated film "Brave" did not match the previous year's release of "Cars 2."

Disney shares dropped 2 percent in after-hours trading to $49. Earlier, shares closed at $50.04, down 4 cents, on the New York Stock Exchange. They are up 33 percent this year.

Morningstar analyst Michael Corty said Disney produced "another solid quarter" particularly with its cable networks business, though he noted that revenue was below what some analysts expected. Overall revenue rose 3 percent in the quarter to $10.8 billion.

"Disney has so many good things going for it that any weakness in the stock would be a buying opportunity," he said.

Company named a top military-friendly employer by G.I. Jobs for second consecutive year

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Continuing its commitment to support transitioning military service women and men, Amazon, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) today announced a donation of 2,000 Kindle devices to non-profit Operation Homefront to support wounded service members and their families. The company also pledged to hire at least 1,200 veterans in the next 12 months.

?Amazon is committed to supporting veterans as they transition from military life to civilian life and is excited to donate 2,000 Kindle devices to the wounded warriors at Operation Homefront, an organization dedicated to supporting our nation?s military,? said Dave Clark, Amazon?s vice president of global customer fulfillment. ?As we continue to create jobs in the U.S., we want to ensure that our nation?s veterans know that Amazon is a destination where they can turn their unique skillsets into a robust career.?

?Many of our service members, who faced challenges abroad, return home to find a whole different set of trials as they work to figure out how their specific military skill set translates into a civilian job,? U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chairman of Senate Veterans? Affairs Committee said. ?I applaud companies like Amazon for committing to help our military heroes adjust to being home by ensuring they have access to quality employment.?

Amazon currently employs hundreds of self-identified veterans in its 40 U.S. fulfillment centers and pays its full-time, permanent employees 30 percent more than what traditional retail store employees earn. Amazon has a team made up of veterans that is devoted to military recruitment and offers its veteran employees access to mentoring and career support to help them develop their skills into long-term careers at Amazon. In 2011, Amazon launched a Virtual Contact Center enabling employees to work from home while providing customer service support, and has actively recruited military spouses and wounded warriors into those roles.

?It?s very fitting that we recognize Amazon?s support of our wounded service members and their families as we near Veterans Day,? said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of Operation Homefront. ?These Kindle devices will greatly enhance their quality of life as they progress through their challenging recovery process.?

Earlier today Amazon was named to the G.I. Jobs annual list of top military-friendly employers, marking its second consecutive year on the list. Amazon?s ongoing commitment to hiring veterans was recognized last month by U.S. Veterans Magazine in their list of Top 100 companies recruiting veterans. Amazon has also been recognized by Military Spouse Magazine as a top military spouse-friendly employer.

?Once finished with military service, most veterans search to find another meaningful mission. They want to ensure their work has a continued sense of purpose,? said Josh Teeter, a former enlisted Army soldier who began his Amazon career as a temporary fulfillment center associate and now leads one of the company?s largest fulfillment centers as a general manager. ?Amazon?s commitment to hiring and developing veterans reflects its customer-centric focus and has provided me with the career opportunities to succeed.?

SWAT Team Evicts Sahara Donahue From ... - AOL Real Estate

A SWAT team brought in to evict a 63-year-old woman from her home in Idaho Springs, Colo., ended up clashing with protesters affiliated with Occupy Denver who surrounded the woman's home.

The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Department told KUSA-TV in Denver that the team was called on after reports that one of the two dozen protesters there had a concealed handgun. The officers reportedly showed up to the scene pointing assault rifles at the protesters

"Usually, an eviction doesn't call for a tactical team," Capt. Bruce Snelling said.

The protesters from the Colorado Foreclosure Resistance Coalition and Occupy Denver were defending homeowner Sahara Donahue, who had been foreclosed on but refused to leave her home. Occupy Denver said on its website that Donahue had lived at her home for 24 years, and she was asking her lender, reportedly U.S. Bank, to stay for an additional 60 days while she looked for another place to live.

"About 10 vehicles filled with men in what appeared to be full battle gear (and assault weapons already in hand) began to fill the road in front of the house," Occupy Denver said. "With all their firepower and intimidation techniques, they targeted the least imposing person there. They put him face down in the dirt and gravel, and cuffed his hands behind him with their zip-tie cuffs."

Two protesters were detained in the squabble, but no one was arrested or charged with a crime. The reported handgun on one of the protesters turned out to be a BB gun, KUSA-TV reported.

"Obviously, in retrospect, it wasn't an excuse. It's also a poor excuse for them to point assault rifles [at us]," Darren O'Connor, a member of the coalition, told the TV station, saying that the BB gun incident did not call for the SWAT team's reaction.

News of the heated protest quickly spread through the Occupy pipeline, with a reportedly first-hand account of the incident posted on the Occupy D.C. website and others. The protesters also garnered the support of Occupy Our Homes, an offshoot of Occupy Wall Street that also stages protests at the homes of distressed borrowers.

That could be a big boon for the coalition's cause. As AOL Real Estate reported, Occupy Our Homes seems to be one of the most successful and influential organizations to spin off of OWS, hiking up its campaigns to fight foreclosure and notching up wins for homeowners facing eviction.

Occupy Denver posted a video of its scrap with the SWAT team on YouTube. The video shows protesters cursing at officers and one protester being detained. Though protesters portrayed the SWAT team as using brute force, Snelling defended their tactics.

"I think our officers handled themselves just fine," he told KASU. "I'll tell you, at the end of the day, we were prepared to meet any resistance that may have come."

Donahue was removed from her home and is reportedly staying with friends.

This is isn't the only case in which a SWAT team was used to remove people occupying foreclosed homes. Last year, a SWAT team gassed a foreclosure in Naples, Fla., to drive out the illegal squatters staying there.

(AP) ? Republicans drove toward recapturing control of the House for two more years on Tuesday as the two parties traded gains from the Eastern seaboard to the Southwest.

With almost two thirds of the chamber's 435 races called by The Associated Press, Republicans had won 173 seats and were leading in 58 others. There were about 20 other seats in Western states, where polls had just closed and vote counting was beginning, where GOP incumbents were not facing serious challenges.

A party needs 218 seats to control the House.

By late evening in the East, Democrats had ousted five incumbent GOP House members to just two Democrats who were defeated by Republicans. But Republicans also picked up three open seats that had been held by Democrats who are leaving Congress.

Slidell Police arrest attempted kidnapper | NOLA.com

Slidell Police have arrested a 75-year-old man who they say tried to kidnap a 14-year-old girl Saturday morning while she was riding her bicycle to school. Elvest Thompson is being held in the St. Tammany Parish jail, charged with attempted kidnapping, according to Slidell Police Detective Daniel Seuzeneau.

According to Seuzeneau, the girl was riding her bicycle at 8:30 a.m. Saturday behind Big Lots at 196 Gause Boulevard when a man blocked her with his car, grabbed her wrist and tried to drag her into the back seat. The girl fought back, punching and kicking the man, and eventually escaped, Seuzeneau said. The girl, who was on her way to a tutoring session at a local high school, contacted her mom, who then contacted police.

Slidell Police collected surveillance video from the area, Seuzeneau said, and with the teen's assistance developed a composite sketch of the man. He was described as an older man with grey hair, a grey mustache and a gray beard, and was driving an older-model white Toyota Camry, Seuzeneau said.

Early Monday, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's deputies were notified of a suspicious vehicle in the same area where the attempted kidnapping occurred, Seuzeneau said. Slidell Police were contacted, and responding officers identified the vehicle and the driver as the man who attempted to kidnap the teen on Saturday.

Slidell Police are still investigating whether Thompson may be involved in other crimes, but at this time it appears to be an isolated incident and a crime of opportunity, Seuzeneau said.

Fact Vs. Fiction: Rolling an Airliner

In Robert Zemeckis?s latest movie Flight, out Nov. 2, Denzel Washington plays Whip Whitaker, a regional-airline pilot who heroically rolls the airplane he?s flying to rescue it from an uncontrolled descent. The inversion sequence?especially an extreme long shot of the aircraft soaring, engines up, over a suburban Atlanta apartment building?stuns. But is it real science?

The basics: At 30,000 feet, airplanes operate on autopilot, with computer software adjusting pitch, power, speed, wing level, and altitude. They stay aloft thanks to engine propulsion, which overpowers air resistance, or drag, and the way air streams over their aerodynamically shaped wings to generate lift. The wing flaps, structures that supplement lift but create drag, would be retracted.

Rolling an airplane, even a big one like an MD-80 (which, by the way, is not recommended by its manufacturer) would involve turning the yoke all the way to one side. The sight certainly would be unusual, but it wouldn?t make for a groundbreaking stunt: In 1955, Boeing chief test pilot Alvin "Tex" Johnson executed two barrel rolls in a Dash 80, the 707 prototype, over Seattle?s Lake Washington as part of the company?s U.S. tour to promote jets as the future mode of air travel. The spectacle worked, notes Boeing historian Mike Lombardi. "Within a month of the barrel roll, the Dash 80 had done its job," he says. "Pan Am ordered 20 of the Dash 80?s offspring?the 707."

Inverting an airplane to regain altitude and balance, as Whitaker does in Flight, would make sense, at least theoretically. Tom Aldag, director of research and development for the National Institute for Aviation Research in Wichita, Kan., explains it like this: If you stick your arm out the window of a moving car and tip your hand up, the air will push it farther up; if you angle it down, the air will push it farther down. When a force pins down a surface (hand or airplane), what?s the last-ditch way to counteract that force? Flip the surface. "In theory, it might work," Aldag says, emphasizing might.

The uncontrolled dive situation certainly complicates things. In the film, Whitaker shouts to his cockpit crew to retract the landing gear, flaps, and speedbrakes, and hit full throttle. But decreasing speed would lessen stress on the airframe, a critical factor. Speedbrakes increase drag and slow the aircraft, says Russ Williams, an experienced test pilot and airline pilot. Flaps do the same, though they?re not designed to deploy at such high speeds. It?d be better to pull back the throttle to power idle while losing altitude, he says.

So now?theoretically?you?re piloting an upside-down airliner. Normally, you?d just keep rolling over until you completed a full 360 degrees, Williams says. Inversion risks engine failure, because fuel pickup tubes draw from the tank?s bottom. But if your airplane had a broken jackscrew and dysfunctional horizontal stabilizer, like Whitaker?s, inversion could help it regain altitude and slow down; its nose would remain stuck pitched down?but now "down" means up, toward the sky. You?d want to increase power if needed, flip, and land quickly; once righted, the airplane would jolt earthward again.

The reaction speed required to execute all that makes this a true Hollywood feat. "If you know what you?re doing, sure, you could roll an airplane," Williams says. "But your timing would have to be pretty perfect to judge all the pitching up and pitching down and touch down at the right attitude."

But airline pilots have a long history of remaining cool under pressure. Consider Sully Sullenberger?or Al Haynes, the captain of United Airlines flight 232, a DC-10 that crash-landed on July 19, 1989, after the catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine led to the loss of all hydraulic flight controls. Haynes and his flight crew used the power of the wing-mounted engines to guide the airplane?s descent. (On approach, Haynes stayed calm and collected?he even kept his sense of humor. After air traffic control cleared Flight 232 for an emergency landing at Sioux City, he quipped: "Roger. You want to be particular and make it a runway, huh?") His DC-10 cartwheeled off the runway into a cornfield, but 185 of the 296 passengers and crew on board survived.

No doubt Hollywood wants to craft an exciting visual experience, and Flight definitely achieves that by raising the stakes for Whitaker (in more ways than one, as moviegoers will see). "It?s looking for the dramatic without crossing the line to the ridiculous," says Craig Hosking, a pilot who?s flown at least 300 different types of aircraft and who worked as an aerial coordinator on the film. "Nobody would?ve ever believed you could land on the Hudson River and not hurt a soul. If you?d seen that in a movie, you wouldn?t have believed it."

Brawlin' Buddies: Tag partners and allies who faced off

Being a buddy, especially in WWE, means you've got to put up with another person's nonsense. You accept them as they are, focus on the positive and put aside pet peeves in the name of unity, harmony and, most importantly, the pursuit of greatness in the squared circle.

But sometimes being a buddy means you gotta slap your pal around a bit when they step out of line (checks and balances: It's a proven system, WWE Universe).

Tag team harmony is far from a given in the rough-and-tumble world of WWE, where two rivals are just as likely to become a tandem as two friends are. Take the current WWE Tag Team Champions, Team Hell No. Born of an unlikely, anger-management-mandated team-up between Kane & Daniel Bryan, the mad champions have retained their titles almost in spite of themselves. Frankly, the only thing that seems to keep them going is the savage glee they take in insulting each other.?And while Team Hell No is definitely a rarity, they're certainly not the only team who couldn't get on the same page. Here are some of WWE's best "brawlin' buddies" throughout the years.

Interview: We chat with the CEO of News360 for Windows 8

There are a ton of free news apps available for Windows 8, including Microsoft's own Bing News. However, there are some developers out there who believe there is a market for a good news aggregator app for Windows 8. One of them is News360, which recently launched their own Windows 8 app. We got a chance to ask the CEO of News360, Roman Karachinsky, about this new app and about Windows 8 app development in general.

First, what can you tell us about your programming background in general?

Before developing the idea for News360, I was a product director at Medialogia, a real-time media monitoring and analysis system, where I developed a platform for creating tailored reputation analysis and news monitoring solutions for top executives and government officials in Russia. The success of that project was what initially started me and Nina (the other co-founder of News360) on the idea of using semantic analysis and personalization to solve a problem for a larger consumer audience.

How did the idea for News360 come about?

News360 was inspired by the content overload dilemma we encounter every day. We wanted to mitigate the anxiety many people have about missing out on the news and provide an easy, convenient one-stop shop for anyone?s news needs by aiming to be the best personal filter possible. Our goal is to connect our users with content that is personally relevant and provides a perfectly balanced news diet, combining a daily dose of major headlines about the news you need to know with stories you want based on your specific hobbies and niche interests, so you never feel out of the loop.

When you first heard about Windows 8 and the Windows Store, what was your first reaction?

We embraced it. While everyone else was holding their breath for the release of the new iPad, we were focusing our efforts in a very different direction: optimizing our app for the Windows 8 consumer preview. This isn't to say we didn't approach this opportunity with caution. We'd built for the Windows 7 phone and certainly weren't blown away by the reception. But it looks like Microsoft might finally be gaining ground in the mobile platform wars and we're big fans of their new UI, so we decided to give it a second chance, and we're happy we did.

How hard was it to develop News360 with the Windows 8 touch screen UI in mind?

The hard part was figuring out how to adapt our UI to Metro without losing the overall recognizability and cohesion of the product. Because Metro is so minimalistic, it actually places may more constraints on the design of the apps than iOS or Android. But once we wrapped our heads around it, the actual development was fairly quick and easy, the frameworks are very thought out, and the development tools are very good (especially for a 1.0 release).

Overall, what makes News360 stand out from other news reader apps?

We often get lumped into the same category as Flipboard and Zite, which makes sense, but only to a point. Because we're not Flipboard ? we don't just package your social feed and favorite publications up into a pretty bow. And we're not Zite ? we let you fine tune your news down to the very specific topics that interest you most. For example, we let you edit your Science category to keep tabs on your obsession with space travel, but scrap the stories about health or genetics, if those don?t happen to strike your fancy. And unlike the others, we focus on keeping our users well-informed by providing a perfectly balanced news diet, streaming headlines about major world news alongside articles on your personal hobbies and interests. Achieving this balance ensures that you are broadening your horizons and learning rather than just being entertained, which is central to News360's consumer value.

Another differentiator is that while we use input from your social networks to serve you news, we don't just rely on social. News360 recognizes that sometimes you want to discover topics and sources outside of your regular bubble, so we've tailored our advanced algorithm to introduce you to new stories you might not be exposed to otherwise, but love nonetheless.

Overall, are there any tricks to making a touch screen based Windows 8 app or game compared to making a regular PC app?

It's a completely different ball game ? the development is much more similar to developing for iOS (or Windows Phone, to pick something closer to home) than it is for desktop Windows. The fact that people might be using your Metro app with their mouse rather than your fingers is something you constantly have to keep in mind, and it's actually a little frustrating, since it's very difficult to accommodate both the touch and mouse users.

What plans do you have about adding to News360 in future updates?

We have tons of great new features we're working on, but you'll have to wait and see what they are ? all I can tell you is that we're working on ways of bringing more of the content you're connected to and making sure that you're seeing all the things you really care about, without all the noise.

How do you feel about some of the comments made by other developers that feel that the Windows Store and Windows 8 are making the PC more of a closed system?

It's the truth, but that's the price you need to pay to have a high-quality app store experience ? it has to be curated. You can still develop Windows apps and distribute them outside the Windows Store, so it's not as much of an issue as it is on other platforms, but I think all platforms will continue moving in this direction.

Finally, is there anything else you wish to say about Windows 8 and its launch?

As I said previously, we're pretty excited about Windows 8. It's launching into a very tough market, but I think it really has a chance to establish itself as a major player ? if Microsoft gets the app ecosystem right and positions the products right. So far, there's been a few missteps (like the WinRT/Win8 confusion), and there is a fair chance that the tablet side of Windows 8 will share the destiny of Windows Phone, but we're certainly hopeful.

We would like to thank Roman for answering our questions!

Personal injury lawsuits | DUI Legal Defense Attorneys

You cannot win a personal injury lawsuit if you don?t have a lawyer. Many people don?t know this because they think that the courts are fair. Look, if you want to live in the real world, you need to grow up. I know that it?s not easy to tell people these things but someone has to do it. I almost lost because they had more than one lawyer and these were very expensive lawyers. The company was responsible for my injury and they didn?t want to admit it. I hired the Stockton Personal Injury Attorney and they have made this victory possible.

The Ultimate Obama Election Night Party Menu: White House ...

A special collection to commemorate the end of Campaign 2012...
President Obama will spend Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 6, in his hometown of Chicago with the First Family before attending what will ostensibly be a victory party in the evening.? The event will be held indoors at McCormick Place, with a crowd of about 10,000.? Whether it's victory or defeat for President Obama, Election Night parties will take place all over the nation.? Herewith, a collection of White House recipes to enjoy while watching the President finish his last campaign EVER.? Above, the President and Mrs. Obama in Iowa, where their journey began in 2008, and where they will end the campaign before heading to Chicago. The Election Night menu includes foods President Obama has eaten most frequently on the campaign trail, as well as his favorites from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The White House chefs have released some very challenging recipes, included here, but most are very easy.? There's steak, fish pizza, vegetarian entrees, a Biden family favorite, salads and vegetable sides.?The perfect finish is pie, the President's favorite dessert.? Cookies are included too; First Lady Michelle Obama won the Family Circle Presidential Cookie Bake-Off.

Toasting POTUS: An Obama Election Night Party would ideally include White House hombrewed beer, and anyone who brewed the recipes as soon as they were released on Sept. 1 will be enjoying their replicales. Bud Light, the President's favorite beer during sudsy campaign stops is the alternate choice.? Mrs. Obama, for the record, enjoys a nice Vodka Gimlet when dining out.? For teetotalers, Iced Sweet Tea is the President's beverage of choice when he dines out. The White House recipe for Sparkling Merry Berry, made with seasonal fruit, is a swell non-alcoholic party drink.

The Ultimate Obama Election Night Party Menu

Presidential Entrees

From Executive Chef Cris Comerford, this challenging recipe can be made with any kind of firm-fleshed white fish.? It is very special, and the recipe also includes instructions for White House Winter Salad with Honey Vinaigrette.? The fish recipe serves 4; the salad recipe serves 6.?

*Grilled Skirt Steak with Poblano Sauce
From Sam Kass, the President and Mrs. Obama's Senior Policy Advisor? for Healthy Food Initiatives.? Kass cooks for the First Family whenever they're home, and says this fast and easy recipe is a Presidential favorite. The sauce is spicy, and the steak is served over a bed of sauteed spinach, included in the recipe.? Serves 4-6 depending on portion size.

*The Obama Family Chili recipe?
President Obama has had hot sauces created in his honor, and that's how the Eater in Chief likes his chili, which can be served over noodles or rice.? "I make a very good chili," President Obama bragged in August.? Serves a crowd, and can easily be doubled or tripled.

*White House Spinach Pie
Created by Comerford for Mrs. Obama's book American Grown, this easy recipe is vegetarian with cheese.? It can be served hot or cold, and tastes delicious either way.? Comerford suggests a dollop of zesty Greek yogurt. Serves 6-10, depending on portion size, and can also be thinly sliced as a side dish.

*Biden Family Chicken Parmesan
Dr. Jill Biden says her recipe is one of Vice President Joe Biden's favorite family meals. As the Veep himself might say, the recipe is really &%$#*!! good.? Perfectly sized for a party, the recipe makes 12 servings.??

*Kitchen Garden Baked Chicken With Brown Rice & Peas
One of the first recipes released to celebrate Mrs. Obama's Kitchen Garden, this creation from Kass is essentially baked "chicken fingers." Sounds like kid food, but adults truly love 'em too.? The easy recipe includes instructions for salad.? Uses a whole chicken, and serves a crowd.

Presidential Pizza

President Obama's re-election campaign put a big spotlight on pizza.? Florida Pizzaman Scott Van Duzer became a symbol for the campaign, and the President also made a habit of delivering pizzas to his hardworking field office volunteers.?? President Obama also enjoyed plenty of pizza while on the trail, most recently at a lunch in Iowa. The White House pizza recipes are vegetarian, but pepperoni and sausage can be added to make them accurately Obama:? The President loves meaty pizza.?

*White House Garden Vegetable Pizza, was inspired by the First Lady's Kitchen Garden, of course.? The recipe from Comerford makes three whole pies, loaded with vegetables. ?Mrs. Obama fed this pizza to the veggie-hating Jay Leno during a campaign visit to his talk show, and he ate it.? Serves a very big crowd, or the recipe can be cut in half.

*White House Grilled Garden Pizza, also inspired, of course, by the First Lady's Kitchen Garden, uses all kinds of grilled vegetables.? It's super easy, with Comerford's recipe calling for store-bought dough and canned sauce.? Serves 4. ? Presidential Salads and Sides
*White House White Bean Salad, from American Grown, is by Kass. It's spicy: Shallots, chives and radishes are mixed with peas and Cannellini or Great Northern beans.? Serves 6-8.

White House Winter Garden Salad, created by Comerford, features winter lettuces with a spicy mix of herbs, grilled sweet onions, and a honey vinaigrette. Serves 6.

*Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Apples and Chiles
Sweet potatoes are a First Family favorite, and this recipe by Kass for American Grown is sweet and spicy.? Serves 4, and can be easily doubled or quadrupled.

*White House Green Beans With Almonds
Created by Comerford for American Grown, this recipe adds shallots and parsley to a traditional side dish.? Serves 6-8.

*White House Roasted Potatoes are loaded with garlic, and served at the President and Mrs. Obama's holiday parties.? Comerford's easy recipe serves 12-16.

*White House No Cream Creamed Spinach
This recipe by Comerford is the very first recipe released by the Obama White House waaaay back in 2009.? It really does taste like traditional creamed spinach, but without using heavy cream.? Serves 6.

Presidential Pies and Cookies

Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses, nicknamed the 'Crust Master' by his boss, has created all the recipes listed here for President Obama's favorite dessert. Pie is served at all important Obama celebrations, including birthdays.

*White House Apple Pie?
President Obama has promised to take America forward, so this quintessentially American pie should have pride of place among the desserts.? It is so good it was served at President Obama's State Dinner honoring China's President Hu Jintao.? Election watchers might find that hilarious, since outsourcing to China was a big topic in the campaign. Serves 6-10, depending on portion size.

*White House Huckleberry Pie
The electoral college map must have key states going blue for President Obama to win.? Huckleberries are blue, plus this recipe uses blueberries, too.? It's been served at every Obama Thanksgiving at the White House, according to Yosses.? Serves 6-10, depending on portion size.

*White House Key Lime Pie
In honor of that very contested battleground state, Florida, this pie can be served as an edible good luck charm. Key Limes are currently hard to find, so use regular limes.? Serves 6-10, depending on portion size.

*White House Sweet Dough Butter Cookies
This favorite cookie recipe by Yosses is served at most White House receptions; it's cut into all kinds of fancy shapes--including cookies shaped like First Dog Bo--when served to guests at during holiday party receptions.? Stamped into a round shape, the cookies can easily be decorated with the Obama 2012 logo. Servings depend on size of cookies cut.

*White and Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies
This recipe offered by the First Lady won Family Circle's Presidential Cookie Bake-Off, which has predicted the winner of the General Election four out of five times since 1992.? Close to 10,000 readers voted this year, and the cookie race reflected the duel going on in real polling.? Mrs. Obama got just 287 more votes than her challenger, "our smallest margin ever," noted Family Circle.? Makes 5 dozen cookies.

Happy Election night...and Forward!?

Boy killed in fall, mauling at Pa. zoo exhibit

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? A young boy visiting the Pittsburgh zoo with his mother and friends was killed Sunday when he somehow got over a railing and then fell about 14 feet into an exhibit that's home to a pack of African painted dogs, who pounced on the boy and mauled him, zoo officials said.

It was not clear whether the child, who was about 3 years old, died from the fall or the attack, said Barbara Baker, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. Zoo officials and police were trying to determine how the child got over the railing, which is about 4-5 feet high, then apparently fell off a mesh barrier and into the exhibit.

When the boy fell, other visitors immediately told staff members, who responded along with Pittsburgh police. Zookeepers called off the dogs, and seven of them immediately went to a back building. Three more eventually were drawn away from the boy, but the last dog wouldn't come into the building, and police had to shoot the animal, Baker said. Officials haven't released the boy's exact age.

"It's clear that the dogs did attack the child, but whether he died of the attack or the fall has yet to be determined," Baker said.

The dogs are about as big as medium-sized domestic dogs, 2 to 2? feet high and 37 to 80 pounds, according to the zoo. African wild dogs are also known as cape hunting dogs, spotted dogs, and painted wolves. They have large, rounded ears and dark brown circles around their eyes and are considered endangered.

Police and the Allegheny County medical examiner's office were investigating. Baker said the zoo, which has never had a visitor death, plans an internal investigation, and no decision has been made yet on the future of the exhibit.

The dogs normally live in a 1.5 acre exhibit called the Painted Dog Bush Camp that's part of a larger open area called the African Savanna, where elephants, lions and other animals can be seen. Visitors walk onto a deck that is glassed on the sides, but open in front where the railing is located. Visitors can look out at the dogs below. The mesh barrier is below the railing.

In May, some of the dogs crawled under a fence and escaped into a part of the exhibit that's usually closed. The zoo was on lockdown for about an hour as a precaution.

Ten African painted dogs were born at the zoo in 2009, and their mother died of a ruptured uterus shortly after delivering the litter. Five of the pups survived. The mortality rate for painted pups is 50 percent, even when born in the wild to a healthy mother.

It was only the second litter to be hand-raised in captivity, along with one in the United Kingdom, zoo officials said at the time.

Seasonal Birds: running, weight-loss and the ... - Fitness Newspaper

Published on November 2, 2012 by FASTERSally ????? No Comments

A few years ago I was out doing a long run? in preparation for the London marathon. It was in the second week of January, a Sunday morning if I remember correctly. All of a sudden I was running alongside a man wearing brand new trainers, track-suit etc.

I started a conversation with the guy and I asked him if he was on a new year?s resolution. He told me that it was not the case. His wife had bought him the gear for Christmas and as soon as the celebration had ended she was on his case. He said the first two times that he had gone out, instead of doing his runs he had pulled over at the pub. His wife was not very pleased when he got home and all the gear was still unused.

To cut a long story short he said to me that he had been fast asleep on this Sunday morning and his wife had woken him shouting ? You lazy bastard, wake up and go for a run? and there he was huffing and puffing.

I never saw him out again.

?

This? man belong to a category of exercises that I like to call ?Seasonal Birds??

They come out in January every year wearing new trainers and gear, such as heart rate monitors, I pods and brand new gloves. You spot them along roads, in parks and in the forest.

A couple of weeks later they disappear to reappear briefly in April, around the time of London Marathon.

They were out again over the summer, inspired by the Olympics, the Paralympics, and the milder weather.

And now that it?s getting colder and darker they are once again disappearing from the streets, leaving the canal paths, tarmac and cycle paths free again.

?

Now, it is a general belief that people have that running is the best way to lose weight. I don?t blame people for believing that ? Just look at the world?s fastest long distance runners. They don?t carry any excess do they?

Unfortunately a lot of it is down to genetics. To get to that level you need to have the right genetic makeup, a body which is lean and which has the right kind of muscle fibre to endure hours and hours of running. Perhaps you need to come from East Africa too.

The average person is not going to get that sort of body if they take up running. What is most likely to happen is that your appetite will increase when you take up running and your body shape will more or less stay the same. Although your body shape will not transform, you will get? fitter?, and your heart and lungs will get stronger. Also, if you do enjoy running by all means, carry on doing it ? it certainly gives you a? buzz!

However, if you?re a after a leaner physique, a better way of transforming your body is most likely to be a healthy combination of improved diet, moderate? cardio and resistance training. This kind of approach is the one most likely to give you the results you?re after and hence is the one you?re most likely to stick with ? unlike the seasonal birds who always disappear (along with their fancy equipment) when their efforts have failed to give them the body of their dreams and the cold nights and dark mornings override any motivation to hit the streets.

Ethical Gifts Toy Giveaway & Product Review? | MUMmedia

fairtrade wooden toys

Just recently I?ve been thinking about Christmas and how every year we seem to accumulate more and more um, stuff.

Every year I feel challenged to do Christmas a little differently ? to buy less and be more thoughtful and considerate about what I do buy. I?ll be honest. I?ve said this before and still found myself in a mad panic on Christmas Eve rushing through K-mart with a trolley full of um, stuff.

So once again?I?m trying to be more organised and thoughtful with Christmas this year.

fairtrade wooden toys

Why fairtrade?

ethical shopping

Buying fairtrade means that the people who made it are looked after and not exploited by the industries that employ them. When we buy fairtade it?s an opportunity to do something good for families living in the developing world.

Wooden toys sold by ethical gifts are made under fairtrade practices in Vietnam by Q toys (An Australian company).

What?s so good about wooden toys?

eco friendly toys

Wooden toys are a great eco-friendly alternative.

Have you ever heard someone say ?They just don?t make ?em like they used to?.? That?s because they don?t. Many popular toy manufacturers make toys that aren?t designed to last so we are forced to keep buying more. It?s called planned obsolescence.

Wooden toys are BRILLIANT quality. They will survive 1,2,3,4 or more children. In fact, they might even stand the test of time so your grandchildren can enjoy playing with them!

Kids these days, including my own, have too many toys.? I would much rather spend more money on good quality ethical, eco-friendly, or hand made items and simply buy less.

eco-friendly wooden toys

My 3 year old (pictured) was pretty darn rough with the balancing game but it didn?t matter as I knew it could take a pounding. He loved it. He counted the rings, he told me the colors and he showed me how he could make it go up and down. My 5 year old explained to him how it was also addition and subtraction. Bless him.

Ethical gifts also stock gifts for the whole family ? not just toys ? they are worth a look!
