Year-End Online Gifts are Bigger, but Number of Donations Slows ...

Donors are making bigger online gifts to charity this month than they did last year at this time, but they are making fewer gifts, according to data provided by Network for Good, a giving site that provided information on online contributions to 8,700 charities.

Last week, the average online gift made through Network for Good was $122.55, up from $113.57 for the same week in 2011.? The average gift size rose by a similar percentage in the previous week.

The gain could be a sign that concerns about the economy are starting to ease, says Katya Andresen, chief operating officer for the giving site. However, she noted that a growing number of companies are using Network for Good to run employee-giving drives, making year-to-year comparisons tricky.

And signs of a slowdown in the number of gifts last week could be worrisome. In the first week of December, the number of donations made through Network for Good grew by 7 percent, but last week they fell by 6 percent.

One reason for more numerous gifts earlier in the month is that many charities participated in #Giving Tuesday, an effort to draw donations just after Thanksgiving. Some fundraisers worry that the day may have simply shifted when people made contributions, rather than prompting more people to give.

December is a crucial month for online giving, as many charities attract their largest gifts then. Blackbaud, the fundraising software company, found that the average gift was $180.04 in December of last year, more than double the average $82.53 given in January. (The company has not released figures yet for this month.)

KPN shares drop on dividend cut, costly licenses

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Shares in Dutch telecoms group KPN, now part of Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim's empire, plunged as much as 15 percent after it cut its dividend for this year and next to meet the higher-than-expected cost of new mobile licenses.

A new player, Sweden's Tele2, also won licenses in Friday's Dutch auction of 4G wireless spectrum, a move likely to increase competition in one of Europe's most lucrative telecoms markets as the winners roll out faster services that allow users to watch video and surf the Internet on the move.

"This is negative news for KPN as we estimate KPN generates about 15-20 percent of group EBITDA (core earnings) from its mobile business in the Netherlands," ING analyst Emmanuel Carlier said on Monday.

The fallout from the auction is the latest blow for KPN after cut-throat competition in text messaging and slowing European economies led it to cut profit and dividend forecasts, its chief financial officer abruptly left and competition authorities launched a probe into possible price fixing.

Some analysts also questioned whether the dividend cut would be enough, suggesting the group might have to sell assets or raise capital to fend off credit rating downgrades.

At 7:30 a.m. ET, KPN shares were down 13.7 percent at 3.997 euros, the second-biggest fall by a European blue-chip stock. The stock briefly touched 3.9 euros, matching a 10-year low hit in November.

The Dutch spectrum auction raised 3.8 billion euros ($5 billion) for state coffers, well above the 800 million euros or so that analysts had predicted.

"This has negative implications for all mobile players in the market," Exane BNP Paribas analysts said in a research note, adding it would raise concerns about the cost of ongoing and upcoming auctions in the rest of Europe.

Slim's investments in European telecoms in KPN and Telekom Austria are below the valuations he bought them and the firms are the worst performers on the European telecoms index this year. KPN, in which Slim's America Movil owns 28 percent, is down 50 percent. Telekom Austria down is 41 percent.

RIGHTS ISSUE?

KPN said on Friday it had paid 1.35 billion euros for 15 separate 4G wireless licenses in the Dutch auction, much higher than the 400-500 million euros analysts had expected. Incumbents Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom also won licenses.

As a result, KPN warned it would not pay a final dividend for 2012 and would pay out only 0.03 euro per share for 2013, far lower than already reduced forecasts. The Dutch group had previously cut its dividend forecast for this year to 0.35 euro from an initial 0.90 euros.

KPN had been planning a payout for 2013 of at least 0.35 euro. However, traders and analysts have long expressed concern about the ability of KPN to pay dividends given it has a debt to core profit ratio exceeding its own targets.

Deutsche Bank analyst Matthew Bloxham warned KPN would end 2012 with a ratio of net debt to EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) of 2.8 times, above KPN's target of 2.5 times.

"We expect leverage to remain above 2.5 times until 2016, assuming a zero dividend policy is maintained until then. We will now have to wait and see if this negative surprise encourages the rating agencies to downgrade KPN's credit rating of Baa2/BBB and, if so, what implications there could be for management's open mind on a possible capital increase," he said.

Fitch, one of the agencies, on Monday cut its credit rating for KPN to BBB- from BBB.

KPN has already been under pressure to sell off non-core assets to keep debt levels under control. Separately on Monday, it said it had sold its Spanish operations to France Telecom, but did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.

In November, KPN agreed to sell some of its German mobile towers for 393 million euros. But it was forced to call off the sale in August of its Belgian mobile business BASE, which it had hoped would raise up to 1.8 billion euros, saying the offers it received were too low.

"If KPN cannot find a buyer for BASE or a partner for network synergies in Germany, then we believe that a rights issue might be the only option left to cut debt," said analysts at Raymond James Euro Equities in a note.

Libya orders temporary closure of borders: state agency

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya's ruling national congress ordered the temporary closure of its borders with four of its neighbors on Sunday and declared its vast desert south a closed military zone in the face of growing unrest.

The national assembly ordered the "temporary closure of the land borders with Chad, Niger, Sudan and Algeria pending new regulations", a decree carried by the official LANA news agency said.

It added that the provinces of Ghadames, Ghat, Obari, al-Shati, Sabha, Murzuq and Kufra "are considered as closed military zones".

The decree also gave the defence ministry powers to appoint a military governor, from outside the area, with authority to arrest fugitives from justice and deport illegal immigrants.

Prime Minister Ali Zeidan returned from a regional tour last week, during which he called for a meeting in Libya with Niger, Mali, Chad and Sudan to secure regional borders.

Several southern members of the congress have boycotted sessions recently in protest against lawlessness plaguing the south, citing increased violence by armed groups there as well as drug trafficking.

"This decision shows that the congress understands the situation in the south, where the security is bad," Mohamed Menawi Al-Houdhiery, a congress member from Sabha, told Reuters.

Earlier this month, nearly 200 prisoners escaped from a jail in Sabha, which has also seen tribal clashes since the end of last year's war that ousted Muammar Gaddafi.

Restoring order in the south is not only important internally for Libya but also for stability in the wider region.

In the chaos that followed Gaddafi's fall, the south was used as a smuggling route for weapons reaching al Qaeda in the Sahara.

Jason Mraz tops Myanmar anti-trafficking concert

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? American singer-songwriter Jason Mraz mixed entertainment with education Sunday to become the first world-class entertainer in decades to perform in Myanmar, with a concert to raise awareness of human trafficking.

Mraz's 2008 hit "I'm Yours" was the finale for the nighttime concert before a crowd of about 50,000 people at the base of the famous hilltop Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, the country's biggest city.

Local artists, including a hip-hop singer, also played at the event organized by MTV in cooperation with U.S. and Australian government aid agencies and the anti-slavery organization Walk Free.

Myanmar is emerging from decades of isolation under a reformist elected government that took office last year after almost five decades of military rule. It has been one of the region's poorest countries, and its bad human rights record made it the target of political and economic sanctions by Western nations. But democratic reforms initiated by President Thein Sein have led to the lifting of most sanctions, and the country is hopeful of a political and economic revival. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, the pro-democracy opposition leader, was released from house arrest in late 2010 and won a seat in parliament last April.

Mraz called his top-billed appearance at the concert a "tremendous honor."

"I think the country is, at this time, downloading lots of new information from all around the world. I've always wanted my music to be here, (for) hope and celebration, peace, love and happiness. And so I'm delighted that my music can be a part of this big download that Myanmar is experiencing right now," he said.

Organizers said Mraz was "the first international artist ever to perform at an open-air, mass public concert in Myanmar."

Jazz artists Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Charlie Byrd visited the country under U.S. government sponsorship in the 1970s, when it was still called Burma, but played at much smaller venues.

Many in the crowd queued for two hours before being admitted to the concert site. Yangon native Sann Oo, 31, wearing a white T-shirt with a sketch of Mraz, said he was pleased that Mraz had come and that there would be a broadcast of the event.

"His visit can promote the image of Myanmar, because people outside have been seeing the country as an insecure place, and poor. Now, they can see how we look like from the concert. It also opens the potential for more concerts by foreign artists," he said.

Mraz has a history of involvement with human rights and other social causes.

But there was some criticism of his visit by campaigners for Myanmar's Muslim Rohingya community, which has been the target of ethnic-based violence this year that has forced scores of thousands from their homes into makeshift refugees camps. They feel Myanmar's government has been complicit in the discrimination, and that Mraz's visit provides it cover with the image of being a defender of human rights.

Walk Free used the occasion of Sunday's concert to launch a campaign calling on the world's major corporations "to work together to end modern slavery by identifying, eradicating and preventing forced labor in their operations and supply chains." They are seeking to have the companies make a "Zero Tolerance for Slavery Pledge" by the end of March next year.

"While many think of slavery as a relic of history, experts estimate that there are currently 20.9 million people living under threat of violence, abuse and harsh penalties," the Australia-based group said in a press release. "Within this massive number, the majority of people -- more than 14.2 million -- are in a forced labor situation, used to source raw materials, and create products in sectors such as agriculture, construction, manufacturing and domestic work."

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

When Tony (Ben Affleck) lands in Tehran and trains the frightened Americans to play their parts as a Canadian film crew, Argo compares the ruses run by governments and movie studios.

The whole thing is paced like a whip, and the third act may literally be the most suspenseful piece of film I've ever seen - and yes, I have seen Rear Window. Recommended without any reservation for every and any cinemagoer.

A terrific supporting cast, especially the non A-list actors, make the dramatic license taken justified and redeem Affleck for miscasting himself in the hero's role.

A brilliant thriller that's based on a historical incident, 'Argo' is one of the best films of 2012.

A wonderfully lively and engrossing movie ...

An enthralling and deliciously entertaining movie -- and a deserved triumph for its star and director.

The details make for a rip-roaring story, which Affleck invests with old-school directorial ?lan.

Ben Affleck leaps on to the A-list of directors with this relentlessly entertaining thriller, combining comedy and nerve-jangling suspense to maximum effect.

If you're a nailbiter, bring gloves, because the suspense will see you reach your knuckles.

Surprisingly enjoyable, given that you may have little prior commitment to this story and only mildly fancy Affleck.

Affleck skilfully turns the screw of suspense, gaining added traction from an extremely convincing recreation of the setting and period.

Ben Affleck's movie tells an amazing but true story set against the context of the Iranian hostage crisis.

Talent borrows and genius steals, but Affleck does something in between: he mimics.

It's impossible to be bored by a story this good, especially with that cast.

Part of what makes this headspinning story believable is the fact that it pans out in an oddly uncomplicated way.

The shaggy and bearded Ben Affleck, barely recognisable from his former self, gives a great lead performance. Understated, intense and steely-eyed, Affleck has the screen presence of legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood.

Affleck the director is utterly sure-footed with an instinctive feel for characterization, tension and pacing as he builds the action towards a nail-biting climax.

A dum-tight thriller demonstrating that Affleck is one of the most accomplished directors working in Hollywood today.

[A] gripping, beautifully performed and often very funny but dramatic thriller.

Take Scathing Product Reviews at Half Value for a More Accurate Rating

We recently discovered Yelp's hidden "filtered" review section, and reader DragonPhyre lets us know another good method for making an informed decision: take angry, negative reviews at half value.

I take bad reviews at half-rating...and I take good ratings at slightly more than normal. Why? It has been my experience that I am far more likely to leave a scathing negative review than a positive one because if I am happy or content, I forget to tell anybody online about it. If I feel slighted or I feel that people should know about a particularly negative aspect of something, then I leave reviews.

Now, everyone's different of course, but if anything, I've found that scathingly negative reviews?especially when there are only a few reviews to pick from?tend to be less trustworthy. Plus, a lot of people seem to think that if a product has any cons, it deserves a one star rating...which makes no sense (see the image above for an example).

Of course, you could expand this tip to include positive reviews that seem fake or planted, too, or anything else you generally want to filter out. If nothing else, it'll help you get a better idea of which reviews you trust and which ones look like baloney.

SuperPop Project develops game for children with motor skills impairments, aided by Microsoft's Kinect (video)

The tools available to therapists tasked with helping children with motor skills impairments improve their range of motion are definitely helpful. But the Human-Automation Systems Lab at Georgia Tech is looking to make said tools even better (specifically for those with cerebral palsy) with the SuperPop Project. With the use of a Kinect and display -- two items that may already be in many homes -- what children will see as a game is actually helping to build upper-arm motor function. The setup is fully customizable on the back end, which allows the therapist to tailor sessions to each patient and to his or her individual progress. During the course of play, the software tracks the coordinates of the user's joints, collecting loads of data for analyzing progression / regression and the like during the course of the rehabilitation. French reporters infiltrate Foxconn iPhone 5 factory, find few of the vaunted changes (updated)

Envoyé Spécial, a 60 Minutes-like program from public TV station France 2, went undercover at the Zhengzhou iPhone 5 Foxconn factory recently (within the past two months) and reported many of the same problems the Chinese manufacturer and Apple promised to fix earlier this year. According to the story that aired last night, dorms at the new factory were occupied by workers despite the fact that many were still under construction and had no elevators, electricity or running water -- apparently because builders focused on the production lines at the expense of housing. A Foxconn manager even warned employees on hidden camera not to plug devices into dorms that did have electricity, saying that eight workers were killed in a fire after overloading circuits.

You do not stop being attracted to good-looking people after you get married. But you do not have to beat yourself up every time someone who?s not your spouse catches your eye. It?s not your feelings, but your actions based on those feelings that proves your commitment to the integrity of your marriage.

God gave humans imaginations. However, sin has crept in and turned God?s gifts against us, causing us to use them for evil instead of good. Spouses find themselves daydreaming about sexually degrading or dominating their spouse, or replacing their spouse with someone else. Part of nurturing a healthy relationship is nurturing healthy sexual imaginings. This may seem to contradict a lot of what Christians have been taught. Isn?t thinking about sex lust? Isn?t lust bad?

Not when it?s about your spouse.

You are allowed to have sex with your spouse, right? Then why shouldn?t you be allowed to think about it? It?s no more wrong than thinking about mowing the yard or grocery shopping.

It becomes sinful when your fantasies somehow harm or disrespect your spouse. Or, when your fantasies recast your spouse with someone else. ?But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.? Payroll Tax Cut: Some Republicans Willing To Back Obama's Proposal

WASHINGTON, Dec 12 (Reuters) - In a turnabout from a year ago, some Republican lawmakers say they are open to backing President Barack Obama's proposal to extend the payroll tax cut for a third year, possibly bringing the sides closer to a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff.
Last year Speaker John Boehner, the leading Republican in the House of Representatives, suffered through a revolt by ultra-conservative Republicans opposing the cut. They argued cutting the payroll tax would add to the deficit and hurt the retirement program it helps finance.
That was last year. This is this year.
"It depends on how it is put out, said New York Representative Tom Reed, one of the Republicans who opposed a Boehner-brokered deal to extend the cut last year. "I think lower taxes is always better policy, so we are interested in looking at lessening the tax burden on all Americans."
Introduced by Obama two years ago as an economic stimulus, the tax holiday reduced an employee's share of the payroll tax from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent, giving workers an extra few dollars to spend and possibly help get the U.S. economy back on its feet.
The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center estimates that expiration of the payroll tax cut will raise taxes an average $700 per household.
"I feel like we are in a bind," Representative John Fleming, a member of the conservative Tea Party Caucus, said on Tuesday. The Louisiana Republican said he was torn between what the tax break was "doing to our trust fund and the need to keep money in the pockets of Americans."
The payroll tax cut was meant to be temporary and is now set to expire on Dec. 31 together with other lower income tax rates. They are key elements of the so-called fiscal cliff, a combination of tax increases and automatic spending cuts that risk triggering another recession.
Last year's tug-of-war with Obama turned into a public relations headache for Republicans, who were in the unusual position of opposing a tax cut that benefits the middle class. They said they were worried about the impact on the deficit and social security funding, but relented to a year-end extension, albeit grudgingly.
Obama proposed extending it further when he put forward his proposal for avoiding the fiscal cliff last month.
Many Republicans - along with some senior Democrats - oppose the extension, in part because it funds the Social Security retirement program.

SOCIAL SECURITY
The Social Security fund is on track to start going bankrupt in 2033 and Democrats and Republicans agree that the program has to be altered to ensure that retirees are not left without pension checks.
Boehner has not publicly ruled out an extension of the payroll tax holiday. Should he accept the White House request as part of a deal, he will need support from rank and file Republicans in the House of Representatives.
Ohio Representative Jim Jordan, leader of a large group of House conservatives, said if lawmakers were asked to simply vote on the extension, he would vote for "keeping it because I view it as a tax cut."
At the same time, Jordan said the tax should eventually revert back to 6.2 percent in the context of a broad reform of Social Security.
Representative Steven LaTourette, a moderate Republican from Ohio, said he would be open to a payroll tax extension if it was part of a package that would include a minimum of $4 trillion in deficit reduction over 10 years.
In the Senate, Republicans Rob Portman of Ohio and Jon Kyl of Arizona also did not rule it out and said support of an extension would depend on the final deal. "Everything depends on what's in the package and how it all works together," Kyl said.
Ron Johnson, Republican senator from Wisconsin, said: "I support extension of all current tax rates, that's what we should be doing."

Jovan Belcher Services: Wake Held For NFL Player In Murder-Suicide (PHOTOS)

DIX HILLS, N.Y. -- Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, who shot and killed his girlfriend before taking his own life earlier this month, was laid out Tuesday in an open silver casket surrounded by flowers and displays of family snapshots at a church where hundreds of mourners gathered at a wake to remember him.

The wake, to be followed by a funeral on Wednesday, was held at the Upper Room Christian World Center in Dix Hills, east of New York City and a few miles north of the West Babylon home where the 25-year-old Belcher was raised. A woman answering the telephone at the center's office earlier Tuesday said she had no information on details of the funeral but noted members of the center's clergy weren't expected to participate.

The center, which features an auditorium capable of seating at least 1,000 people, describes itself on a website as "a Bible based non-denominational, multi-racial, family church."

A man outside the church, who stopped photographers from entering the wake, said the Belcher family had no comment. Mourners leaving the wake also declined to speak with reporters.

Police say Belcher fatally shot 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins on Dec. 1 at the Kansas City home they shared with their 3-month-old daughter, Zoey. They say he then drove to the Chiefs' practice facility at Arrowhead Stadium, where coach Romeo Crennel, general manager Scott Pioli and defensive assistant Gary Gibbs witnessed his suicide.

Friends have said the relationship between Belcher and Perkins was strained. The couple briefly lived apart recently before getting back together by Thanksgiving, friend Brianne York said.

Perkins, who was from Texas, was remembered at two funeral services last week.

Belcher starred at West Babylon High School before playing college football at the University of Maine. He joined the Chiefs in 2009 as an undrafted free agent but became a starter during the 2012 season.

In the days following the shooting, Belcher's family erected a small shrine outside the West Babylon home, hanging jerseys and team banners and displaying trophies and other awards.

Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepherd, who was visiting him and witnessed Perkins' death, declined to speak to an Associated Press reporter in a telephone call on Tuesday. Shepherd has temporary custody of the couple's daughter, Kansas City police said.

There have been so many rumors about Apple quietly designing?its own television sets that we're reasonably sure that we'll see 'em in our living rooms one of these days. Especially if the latest rumor?? that Apple's in the process of testing various TV designs?? pans out.

The report comes via the Wall Street Journal's?Lorraine Luk, who cites anonymous sources "familiar with the situation," writing?that Apple's already working with component suppliers in Asia on the iTV project. Or Apple TV. Or whatever you want to call it until the folks in Cupertino finally tell us something official about this rumored gadget.

"Executives at some of Apple's suppliers?said the company has been testing designs for a large-screen high-definition set," Luk explains?before adding that one of the sources clarified that this "isn't a formal project yet" and that it "is still in the early stage of testing."

Curiously enough, Apple CEO Tim Cook, when asked about the company's future plans by Rock Center's Brian Williams jumped right to the topic of televisions.??When I go into my living room and turn on the TV, I feel like I have gone backwards in time by 20 to 30 years,? Cook said. ?It?s an area of intense interest. I can?t say more than that.?

Like some other commenters, one thing I have LOVED continuing with the kids in my life is the Christmas Eve Pajamas. Every year we would go to a candlelight service at church on Christmas Eve, then we?d go home and open one gift each. The gift was always a new set of pajamas ? some years my mom made them herself but some she bought them from a super-comfy store. We?d all change into our new PJs and it was like the starting gun for Christmas. We would put on the PJs and beg to go to bed as soon as they were on, because by then we knew that the only thing between us and Christmas was sleep. Then we?d lounge around in our new comfy PJs all day on Christmas, and look cute in all the photos to boot.

Last year, I randomly stumbled onto pajamas in the telltale striped pattern I remembered from my childhood and I texted my mom and said, ?Hey, those awesome comfy PJs you?d always buy us? Were they from Hanna Andersson?? She was like ?YES!? so I bought some and now the tradition of ultra-comfy PJs on Christmas Eve lives on.

When I was really little I thought it was totally amazing that every year, the gift my parents picked out totally at random from the pile was the Christmas PJs. I thought that it was, like, proof that Christmas actually is magic after all ? that my parents could go and deliberate and painstakingly decide which present to have us open, and it would ALWAYS be the pajamas. Obviously they knew which gift was which, and chose the pajamas intentionally. I was not really the smartest child. But I may have been one of the happiest. ;)

Between this dense, all-in-one design and stacking up to 2GB of RAM directly on top, Penwell occupies about 17 percent less space than its Moorestown ancestor and helps explain why we're looking at Atom-powered phones instead of another round of MIDs. We wouldn't get too comfortable with the current generation, though, as Intel is gradually warming up 22-nanometer chips that could make Penwell seem old hat.
