If you?re sleepy after you ate, then it?s possible you ate too much. Before your main course, eat more greens or have a salad. Doing this can fill the stomach without taking too many calories.

Making sure that you have regular exercise is important as well as a pre diabetic diet. To keep your systems running smoothly and regulate your blood glucose levels, do some physical activity every day. Even though what you do depends on your fitness levels, you still need to at least take a half hour walk every day.

Exercise helps your body to use insulin effectively. When you are using insulin effectively, the body will convert blood glucose to energy. But it will be converted to fat when you?re not effectively using insulin. This is the way exercise regulates blood sugar levels. Because the effect only lasts between 12-48 hours, exercising everyday is important if you have pre diabetes. But this is in addition to your pre diabetic diet which you should follow.

Afghan cop drugs colleagues, kills them as they sleep

An Afghan policeman laced food with sleeping pills and then killed nine of his colleagues?as they slept Friday, a police officer reportedly said.

The?attack in the eastern province of Paktika was?the latest in a string of rogue shootings that has also targeted foreign forces.

Two policemen?were detained after the attack in Yahya Khil district, while a third officer was missing. It was not clear if the assailant was among the pair detained, said Mukhlis Afghan, the provincial governor's spokesman.

Citing Paktika police chief Dawlat Khan Zadran, The New York Times reported that the assailant, who it named as Assadullah, put drugs in the food served Thursday night.

Samsung Brightside (Verizon Wireless)

Upon first glance, the Samsung Brightside looks a lot like a midrange, keyboarded smartphone. At $99.99, it's priced like one too. But the Brightside is actually just an overly ambitious feature?phone. It pairs a nice slide-out keyboard with a responsive touch screen and decent call quality. That's the bright side. Unfortunately, the phone's display looks terrible from any angle other than straight on, the camera is poor, the video camera is worse, and multimedia support is spotty. While it may be a decent choice for some, you'll probably be happier with either a simpler phone or a smartphone.

Design and Call Quality
The Brightside measures 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.3 ounces. It's made entirely of black plastic, with a coarsely textured back panel. There's a volume rocker on the upper left side of the phone, as well as lock and camera buttons on the right side. Aside from those, there are four function keys located beneath the phone's screen. At first, the 3.1-inch, 320-by-240-pixel capacitive display looks decent. It's a good size, and feels nice and responsive. But turn the phone even slightly and the colors look different, or you can't see anything at all. Unless you're looking straight at it, the screen is practically useless. That's a big disappointment. The screen also doesn't shift orientation unless you open the keyboard. That means you need to slide the phone open pretty much anytime you want to type anything, unless you're willing to deal with typing on the on-screen number pad.

The phone slides open to reveal a spacious four-row QWERTY keyboard. The keys are slightly raised plastic bubbles, and I had no trouble using the Brightside to type out long messages. But nearly every time I flipped open the keyboard, I accidentally pressed the phone's camera button or activated the voicemail. You can probably get around that with practice.

The Samsung Brightside is a dual-band EV-DO Rev 0 (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi. Voice quality is pretty good. Voices sound clear and very loud in the phone's earpiece, though they lack depth and richness. On the other end, calls made with the phone sound a little robotic but clear and feature average noise cancellation. The speakerphone sounds fine and is just loud enough for outdoor use. Calls also sounded fine through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and the Nuance-powered voice dialing worked well over Bluetooth. Battery life was average at 5 hours and 25 minutes of talk time.

Interface and Apps
The Brightside has a simple, clean interface, though it could benefit from some customizability. The home screen consists of 12 icons, with a launchpad at the bottom of the screen for your contacts, number dialer, recent calls, and voicemail. While I like this layout, it's limited. To listen to music or watch a video, for instance, you need to tap through to the Media Center, then choose Pictures and Video, then choose Videos. If you watch a lot of videos, it would've been nice to have the option of replacing an icon on the home screen with a shortcut to the videos menu.

Aside from the physical camera button on the right side of the phone, if you want to take a photo you first need to choose My Pictures, and then find the small Camera button buried in the right corner of the screen. The option to place a camera button on the home screen would've been much easier. Or maybe I'm just reviewing too many smartphones lately. That complaint aside, I found the Brightside relatively easy to navigate.

South Sudan official says Sudan bombs oil field

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? Sudan's military bombed an oil field in South Sudan on Tuesday, a South Sudan official said, as a dangerous flare-up in border violence appeared to scuttle plans for a presidential summit between the two countries.

Unity State Minister of Information Gideon Gatpan said Sudan dropped at least three bombs near oil fields in the town of Bentiu. Gatpan said the extent of any damage wasn't immediately known.

The attack comes one day after Sudan and South Sudan clashed in the disputed border town of Jau, prompting Sudan to cancel President Omar al-Bashir's trip to meet with South Sudan President Salva Kiir next week.

South Sudan broke away from Sudan last year, but tensions between the longtime foes have remained high.

Among the unresolved issues is the demarcation of the border and an agreement to share oil revenue. South Sudan earlier this year stopped pumping oil because it said Sudan ? which owns the pipelines the south's oil must travel through ? was stealing its oil.

Despite the increased violence, South Sudan held out hope the presidential meeting could still happen. South Sudan Minister of Information Barnaba Benjamin Marial said the south still expects al-Bashir to attend the meeting next week, saying South Sudan had not received an official cancellation from Khartoum.

Marial said the south believes that "forces of war" in Khartoum were trying to derail the peace process, but not al-Bashir himself. He said the south would not take the bait.

"Our president has said clearly we will not be dragged into a senseless war," Marial said. "We will not be dragged into a conflict with Sudan."

In a statement, the White House urged the two sides to "exert the greatest restraint" and said it is "critical" that they proceed with the presidential summit and other meetings.

"Only through direct contact and negotiations over fundamental issues of security and border management ... can Sudan and South Sudan avoid further fighting, achieve vitally needed economic cooperation, and coexist in peace," the statement said.

The two countries disputed which side was the aggressor in Monday's clash in Jau.

Marial said that Sudanese troops "without any provocation" bombed Jau on Monday afternoon before Sudanese ground forces and militia fighters moved in. Marial said that South Sudan troops repulsed the "invading forces" back to the town of Heglig, Sudan. Marial had no information on troop numbers involved or casualty figures.

Sudanese authorities say South Sudan started the fight.

"These attacks are the responsibility of the SPLA and the South Sudanese government," Sudanese Second Vice President Alhaj Adam Yousif said during an address on Sudanese state television late Monday. "The SPLA attacks have targeted our oil and our army." The SPLA is an acronym for South Sudan's military.

Sudan said that the Darfur-based rebel group Justice and Equality Movement, or JEM, fought alongside the SPLA during Monday's clash.

The border violence continued into Tuesday near Benitu, Gatpan said.

"They are hovering and dropping over the northern part of town in the oil fields, the main Unity oil fields," Gatpan said. He said teams were being sent to the oil fields to assess the damage.

Yousif said that given Monday's violence, the presidential visit to sign agreements recently reached in Ethiopia would not happen.

"The visit of President Bashir was tied to good neighborly relations," said Yousif. "There is no way for this summit to take place now."

The cancellation of the summit effectively halts momentum in negotiations between the two countries on issues leftover from a 2005 peace deal that saw South Sudan separate from Sudan last July.

Oil has been the biggest disagreement. The row prompted South Sudan to shut down its oil production in late January, depriving both countries of a critical revenue stream.

Talks were stalled until two weeks ago when the two sides reached an agreement on citizenship and border demarcation. The agreements ? meant to be signed next Tuesday ? were seen as positive steps.

But there were early signs the deal might not hold. Both countries have accused each other of supporting rebel groups on either side of the border, though both sides deny the allegations.

Sudan's Minister of Defense Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein recently said that any rebel activity in Sudan's South Kordofan state could cancel the agreements. Sudan is battling the rebel SPLM-North, which until South Sudan's secession was linked to the south's ruling party ? the SPLA. The south has said it is not supporting the SPLM-North.

The cancellation of the presidential summit will set north-south relations back, said Aly Verjee, an analyst for the Rift Valley Institute.

"The new fighting unfortunately trumps progress made in recent negotiations. It is unsurprising that talks have been canceled given those events," he said.

Marial said South Sudan is still committed to the presidential summit.

"Our invitation still stands as it is. These are forces within the (ruling) NCP party which don't want this process to continue," he said.

The U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday that it fears for the safety of refugees who have fled the fighting in South Sudan after the violence flared up in recent days. Spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said more than 16,000 people who have fled the Nuba mountains in Sudan are currently living in South Sudan's Yida settlement.

She said the agency wants to move the refugees away from the border where the fighting is taking place.

In total, more than 105,000 Sudanese have fled to South Sudan and 30,000 have fled to Ethiopia.

Connie Dieken: Influencer of the Week: Apple's New CEO Tim Cook

"Just do what's right," Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs reportedly advised Tim Cook, his successor as CEO of Apple Inc.

That's how shift happens.

Cook proved his inner boldness this week in a major shift with the late Jobs' philosophy. He announced the company's new dividend and buyback plan, essentially bringing sexy back to the musty old dividend.

The quarterly check, one seen as taboo for tech companies, is now cool again.

This is an extraordinary move for a company that is still in high growth mode. In the past, issuing regular payments to stockholders has signaled that growth mode is over and a company's best days may be behind. Other sleek tech companies like Google and Amazon don't pay a dividend.

Cook begs to differ. And he does so with precision.

During last week's teleconference with New York analysts, he front loaded his announcement with influential buzzwords, such as:

1. "We are innovating at an incredible pace."


2. "We're building a tremendous ecosystem with apps and content."


3. "We're expanding our footprint with new carrier partners and other third-party resellers."


4. "We continue to open stores, including 40 this fiscal year alone."


5. "We are investing in our direct enterprise sales force."

The last comment is another telling departure from Steve Job's approach. Jobs famously loathed corporate IT buyers. Cook emphasizes their importance.

Apple was hoarding a ridiculously large cash reserve -- at last count, $97.6 billion -- the largest reserve of any non-financial organization in the U.S. To put that number in context, Apple's reserve was larger than the entire market value of 485 of the 500 companies in the Standard & Poor Index.

The measure of any communication is the listeners' response. Wall street responded by pushing Apple shares to a record $601.10, its first-ever close above $600. And Cook's message is also resonating with large fund families such as Vanguard and Fidelity, whose rules previously prevented them from including stocks that didn't pay a dividend. They're now able to include Apple in their funds.

Sure, there are grumblers. Some analysts are disappointed with the size of Apple's 1.8 percent divided. In comparison, Hewlett-Packard pays 2 percent and Microsoft pays 2.5 percent.

But as Cook summed up his announcement, he noted, "Simply stated, we don't see ceilings to our opportunities." The same can be said about Cook. He appears to be fueled by an inner boldness to do what's right -- he delivered a compelling message that resonated with his target audience, and he gained their commitment.

Like his predecessor, the late, great Steve Jobs who handpicked him, it appears that Tim Cook is a true influencer.

Even a typical weekend night spent on Sixth Street in Austin, Texas, is not for the faint of heart. But when the music portion of South by Southwest took over the city recently, the entire downtown area exploded with throngs of hipsters, dueling sound-clouds of music from nearby stages, and all the free sponsored beer one?s heart might desire.

Little did out-of-town passersby know, there was a dark, calm oasis hidden right in the eye of the storm. Midnight Cowboy, a brothel shut down just last year, was recently purchased by Tim League ? the mind behind Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, a chain of movie theaters that serve alcohol ? and reopened as a speakeasy-style bar.

Classic cocktails and creative spin-offs have made as big a comeback in Austin as they have throughout the rest of the country. But even though speakeasy-style bars have been popping up all over bigger cities like New York and San Francisco for some time, this is Austin?s first covert-cocktail venture ? and how fitting that its space had a dark side until just recently.

The location previously had a sign advertising ?Midnight Cowboy Modeling and Oriental Massage? but now stands unmarked, save for the single red light kept at the front door. Reservations must be made in advance online, and the website lists a number that? gives further instructions for entering by ringing a doorbell labeled ?Harry Craddock? ? named after the Prohibition-era mixologist who fled the States to bar-tend at London?s Savoy Hotel.

The 48-seat lounge gets its vintage feel from tall, black leather booth seating, marble tables, tin ceiling tiles and the late 19th century-style bar, where a sculpted patron saint of prostitutes looks on. Eye-level mirrors border the room, which is lit by wall sconces that glow like embers; exposed brick walls reach toward the ceiling as a reminder of the swanky lounge?s sordid past. Three former ?massage rooms? in the back have even been converted into cozy private rooms for six to eight patrons at a time.

Drinks range from the refreshing Kalamazoo Julep (Dutch jenever, housemade celery syrup, celery leaves, mint) to the boozy and Lindsey?s Lament (single-barrel bourbon, Becherovka, maple, salt tincture, orange oils). Savory and sweet notes are perfectly balanced in both the innovative Joe Buck (Texas Blue Corn Whiskey, mustard syrup, smoked paprika, fresh lemon, ginger beer) and the frothy Pisco Sourgrass (Peruvian pisco, lemon, sorrel-honey syrup, tiki bitters, egg white, cracked black pepper).

Some drinks are also concocted at the table by knowledgeable bartenders, using an arsenal of ingredients and instruments drawn from a rolling cart. ?When we saw the room and started to think about what the design was going to look like, it felt like a train car to me,? said beverage director Bill Norris. ?So ? they?re based around the old Pullman bar carts.?

Norris also looks forward to using the back patio to grow citrus trees and herbs, making for truly hyper-local bar ingredients. ?It?s not so much about the menu in here for me,? he mused. ?When you?re walking down the street ? and you get in here, it?s just sort of that aaah feeling. And (we want) the drinks to be an extension of that aaah feeling.?

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? The parents of an unarmed black teenager shot dead by a neighborhood watch captain in a gated community are leading a rally Monday in the city where he was killed to protest the lack of an arrest or prosecution.

Professional football players Ray Lewis and Santonio Holmes are joining civil rights leaders Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton at the rally in Sanford, near Orlando, that comes before a city commission meeting. It's the first time Sanford commissioners have met since the city's police chief stepped down in what he called a temporary move.

Also joining the rally are the comedian Sinbad and leaders from the Urban League and ACLU.

Trayvon Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, also are planning to address the city commission at its weekly meeting. The meeting was moved from City Hall to the Sanford Civic Center to accommodate the expected crowd.

There have been rallies around the country as anger has spread over the shooting a month ago Monday.

Seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin was returning to his father's fiancee's home from a convenience store when Zimmerman, 28, started following him, telling police dispatchers he looked suspicious. At some point, the two got into a fight and Zimmerman pulled out his gun.

Zimmerman told police he shot in self-defense and hasn't been arrested or charged.

Zimmerman has not spoken in public about the shooting. His lawyer, Craig Sonner, has been speaking for him and has denied there was any racial motive in the shooting. Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Hispanic.

A man identified as a friend of Zimmerman said Monday the neighborhood watch volunteer would tell the teen's parents he's "very, very sorry" if he could.

Speaking on ABC's "Good Morning America," Joe Oliver said George Zimmerman is not a racist and has virtually lost his own life since the shooting.

"This is a guy who thought he was doing the right thing at the time and it's turned out horribly wrong," Oliver said.

On NBC's "Today" show, Oliver said he had spoken with Zimmerman's mother-in-law, who said Zimmerman was remorseful.

"I learned that he couldn't stop crying for days after the shooting," Oliver said.

Solar lasers to target asteroids and space junk

Pioneering engineers at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow are developing an innovative technique based on lasers that could radically change asteroid deflection technology.

The research has unearthed the possibility of using a swarm of relatively small satellites flying in formation and cooperatively firing solar-powered lasers onto an asteroid this would overcome the difficulties associated with current methods that are focused on large unwieldy spacecraft.

Dr Massimiliano Vasile, of Strathclyde's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, is leading the research. He said: "The approach we are developing would involve sending small satellites, capable of flying in formation with the asteroid and firing their lasers targeting the asteroid at close range.

"The use of high power lasers in space for civil and commercial applications is in its infancy and one of the main challenges is to have high power, high efficiency and high beam quality all at the same time.

"The additional problem with asteroid deflection is that when the laser begins to break down the surface of the object, the plume of gas and debris impinges the spacecraft and contaminates the laser. However, our laboratory tests have proven that the level of contamination is less than expected and the laser could continue to function for longer than anticipated."

Just over 100 years ago a 2000-kilometer area of vegetation was destroyed when an object believed to be 30-50 metres in diameter exploded in the skies above Tunguska, Siberia. While the likelihood of an immediate threat from a similar asteroid strike remains low, it is widely recognised that researching preventative measures is of significant importance.

Dr Vasile added: "The Tunguska class of events are expected to occur within a period of a few centuries. Smaller asteroids collide with Earth more frequently and generally burn in the atmosphere although some of them reach the ground or explode at low altitude potentially causing damage to buildings and people.

"We could reduce the threat posed by the potential collision with small to medium size objects using a flotilla of small agile spacecraft each equipped with a highly efficient laser which is much more feasible than a single large spacecraft carrying a multi mega watt. Our system is scalable, a larger asteroid would require adding one or more spacecraft to the flotilla, and intrinsically redundant - if one spacecraft fails the others can continue."

Dr. Vasile is now investigating the use of the same concept to remove space debris. The number of objects in orbit classified as debris is ever-increasing and with no widely accepted solution for their removal. Researchers at the University of Strathclyde believe the space-borne lasers could be used to lower the original orbit of the space debris and reduce the congestion.

Dr Vasile said: "The amount of debris in orbit is such that we might experience a so called Kessler syndrome this is when the density becomes so high that collisions between objects could cause an exponentially increasing cascade of other collisions.

"While there is significant monitoring in place to keep track of these objects, there is no specific system in place to remove them and our research could be a possible solution.

"A major advantage of using our technique is that the laser does not have to be fired from the ground. Obviously there are severe restrictions with that process as it has to travel through the atmosphere, has a constrained range of action and can hit the debris only for short arcs."

"The additional problem with asteroid deflection is that when the laser begins to break down the surface of the object, the plume of gas and debris impinges the spacecraft and contaminates the laser. However, our laboratory tests have proven that the level of contamination is less than expected and the laser could continue to function for longer than anticipated."

Just over 100 years ago a 2000-kilometer area of vegetation was destroyed when an object believed to be 30-50 metres in diameter exploded in the skies above Tunguska, Siberia. While the likelihood of an immediate threat from a similar asteroid strike remains low, it is widely recognised that researching preventative measures is of significant importance.

Dr Vasile added: "The Tunguska class of events are expected to occur within a period of a few centuries. Smaller asteroids collide with Earth more frequently and generally burn in the atmosphere although some of them reach the ground or explode at low altitude potentially causing damage to buildings and people.

"We could reduce the threat posed by the potential collision with small to medium size objects using a flotilla of small agile spacecraft each equipped with a highly efficient laser which is much more feasible than a single large spacecraft carrying a multi mega watt. Our system is scalable, a larger asteroid would require adding one or more spacecraft to the flotilla, and intrinsically redundant - if one spacecraft fails the others can continue."

Dr. Vasile is now investigating the use of the same concept to remove space debris. The number of objects in orbit classified as debris is ever-increasing and with no widely accepted solution for their removal. Researchers at the University of Strathclyde believe the space-borne lasers could be used to lower the original orbit of the space debris and reduce the congestion.

Dr Vasile said: "The amount of debris in orbit is such that we might experience a so called Kessler syndrome this is when the density becomes so high that collisions between objects could cause an exponentially increasing cascade of other collisions.

"While there is significant monitoring in place to keep track of these objects, there is no specific system in place to remove them and our research could be a possible solution.

"A major advantage of using our technique is that the laser does not have to be fired from the ground. Obviously there are severe restrictions with that process as it has to travel through the atmosphere, has a constrained range of action and can hit the debris only for short arcs."

Obama vows to pursue further nuclear cuts with Russia

SEOUL (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama vowed on Monday to pursue further nuclear arms cuts with Russia, urged China to follow suit and issued stern warnings to North Korea and Iran in their nuclear standoffs with the West.

Acknowledging the United States has more warheads than necessary, Obama held out the prospect of new reductions in the U.S. arsenal as he sought to rally world leaders for additional concrete steps against the threat of nuclear terrorism.

"We can already say with confidence that we have more nuclear weapons than we need," Obama told students at South Korea's Hankuk University a few hours before a global nuclear security summit opened in Seoul.

He pledged a new arms-control push with incoming Russian president Vladimir Putin when they meet in May. But any further reductions would face stiff election-year opposition from Republicans in Congress who already accuse him of weakening America's nuclear deterrent.

Obama laid out his latest strategy against the backdrop of nuclear defiance from North Korea and Iran, twin challenges that have clouded his overall nuclear agenda and the summit in Seoul.

He set expectations high in a 2009 speech in Prague when he declared it was time to seek "a world without nuclear weapons". He acknowledged at the time it was a long-term goal, but his high-flown oratory helped him win the Nobel Peace Prize.

In Seoul, Obama made clear that he was committed to that notion, saying "those who deride our vision, who say that ours is an impossible goal that will be forever out of reach", were wrong.

Though Obama was vague on exactly how such a vision would be achieved, he voiced confidence the United States and Russia, which reached a landmark arms-control treaty in 2010, "can continue to make progress and reduce our nuclear stockpiles".

"I firmly believe that we can ensure the security of the United States and our allies, maintain a strong deterrent against any threat, and still pursue further reductions in our nuclear arsenal," he said.

But another arms accord with Moscow will be a tough sell to U.S. conservatives who say Obama has not moved fast enough to modernize the U.S. strategic arsenal, a pledge he made in return for Republican votes that helped ratify the START treaty.

The United States and Russia are the two biggest nuclear powers, possessing thousands of warheads between them, arsenals that arms-control advocates say are capable of destroying the world several times over.

Obama said he wanted to take arms control talks with the Russians to a new level. "Going forward, we'll continue to seek discussions with Russia on a step we have never taken before - reducing not only our strategic nuclear warheads, but also tactical weapons and warheads in reserve," he said.

With U.S. officials privately expressing concern about China's opaqueness over its growing nuclear weapons program, Obama said he had urged the rising Asian power "to join us in a dialogue on nuclear issues, and that offer remains open".

NORTH KOREA, IRAN

Obama also used his speech to call on North Korea, which plans a long-range rocket launch next month, to curb its nuclear ambitions or face further international isolation.

"And know this - there will be no more rewards for provocations. Those days are over. This is the choice before you," he said, directing his comments at North Korea's leadership.

Chinese President Hu Jintao indicated to Obama during a one-on-one meeting on Monday that he took the North Korean nuclear standoff very seriously and was registering his concern with Pyongyang, a senior White House aide said.

China is the secretive North's only major ally.

"The two leaders agreed to coordinate closely in responding to this potential provocation ... and if necessary consider what steps need to be taken following a potential launch," the White House aide added, without elaborating on possible consequences.

Obama says the destitute North could be hit with tighter sanctions if it goes ahead with the rocket launch, but experts doubt China will back another U.N. Security Council resolution against North Korea.

The North says the rocket will send a satellite into space, but South Korea and the United States say it is a ballistic missile test.

Even though two previous launches of the long-range missile have failed, Washington says the North's missile program is progressing quickly and that the American mainland could come under threat within five years.

The flight path from a west coast launch pad will take the rocket south towards the Philippines. The Defense Ministry in Seoul said South Korea was drawing up a plan to shoot down any components that may crash into South Korean territory.

The ministry added that the main body of the rocket was being positioned into place for the launch.

Earlier on Monday, Obama accused Iran of having taken the "path of denial, deceit and deception" in the past but said there was still time for a diplomatic solution and that Iran had to act with a sense of urgency.

"Time is short," Obama said, referring to the prospects of renewed negotiations between Iran and world powers. "Iran's leaders must understand that there is no escaping the choice before it."

Iran says its nuclear program is purely peaceful, but Israel and Western nations believe it is moving towards a nuclear bomb that could change the regional balance of power.

Obama has urged Israel to hold off on any pre-emptive strikes on Iran's nuclear sites to give sanctions and diplomacy more time to work.

The U.S. president also met Russia's outgoing leader, Dmitry Medvedev, on the sidelines of the summit, with missile defense in Europe, Iran and the conflict in Syria topping their agenda.

Medvedev said he supported peace envoy Kofi Annan's mission to end fighting in Syria. Russia and China have shielded Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from U.N. Security Council condemnation by vetoing two resolutions over the bloodshed.

"We together with the U.S. president maintain that (Annan's mission) is a good way to reach at least an initial point of settlement and open the road for communication between various groups of society in Syria," he said.
